Healthy Eyes - Feast on Natural Foods

"Are you eating the right kind of foods that can help improve vision and prevent age-related eye diseases such as cataract. It is easier to protect your eyes by eating foods that are packed with vision-friendly nutrients. Learn more about some of these foods that can improve your eyesight and help protect against sight threatening diseases.

Eggs – Eggs are full of eye-friendly antioxidants. Egg yolks are high in lutein. It is a type of a carotenoid that helps fight macular degeneration, the leading cause of old age blindness.

Green and leafy vegetables – These vegetables contain carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are very beneficial for vision and have a positive impact on the retina. They may help reduce disability and discomfort from glare, enhance contrast and reduce photo-stress recovery times.

Fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C – Citrus fruits like oranges and vegetables like red capsicums are packed with vitamin C. They provide antioxidants that help keep the eyes healthy. Vitamin C helps the body form and maintain connective tissue, including collagen found in the cornea of the eye. It promotes the delicate capillaries in the retina.

Nuts – Nuts are tasty snacks that are excellent source of vitamin E and minerals such as zinc that help keep your eyes healthy. They may decrease the risk of cataract and age related macular degeneration. Being packed with vitamin E, nuts help protect membranes of cells throughout the body against damage caused by free radicals.

Beans – Kidney beans, black-eyed peas and lentils are good sources of bioflavonoids and zinc. They can help protect the retina and lower the risk for developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

Oysters and pork – Oysters and pork are super foods proven to boost eye health. The selenium and zinc in these foods are good for your eyes as they protect against macular degeneration and night blindness.

Salmon, tuna and other oily fishes – Salmon, tuna and other fatty fishes are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids which may help treat eye diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal infant vision development. It is a high source of B vitamins too which can slash the risk of cataracts by about half.

This blog brings a variety of articles and recipe ideas, and it is important to note, not all may be suitable for you. If you may have any food allergies, or underlying health issues these must always be taken into account. If you are a diabetic and not sure how certain foods may affect your blood sugars, test is best, i.e. use a reliable meter.

It sounds like I am doing ok with my diet for my eyes! Sight is definitely something I do not want to loose since my vision was horrible before having the lasik procedure. Not being able to see anything without glasses or contacts was an unpleasant feeling.

Like most people I eat food items as per the above list (except nuts/oysters/pork).However, I do reinforce them with some supplements of luttein/zeanaxathin, vit c, vit E, minerals selenium and zinc.

A very useful list! I do eat most of these things, except for oysters. I think I should eat more eggs, though.

Thank you for posting. I had lasik 20 years ago when it was new. My eyes regressed in such a way that I am not able to have corrective surgery for that. Then I developed cataracts at a young-ish age (50's). I had cataract surgery. Currently, eyesight is good with contacts/glasses. However, I want to do anything I can to keep it so.

Yes, Tom they are.
"Tomatoes contain a group of phytochemicals called carotenoids, including lycopene, lutein and beta-carotene. These compounds are important to maintain eye health and may protect against age-related macular degeneration and other eye diseases."

strange, to see the word 'natural' tagged onto 'food'. Just doesn't seem right.

Of these foods, the one that I don't like is Salmon...I wish I could develop a taste for it. Both my daughters love it. But hubby nor I do. At least the others you listed makes me feel like I do like some good things.

This is good, Jan. I know lots of these are wonderful foods but now I know why! Think I'd better start eating more pork (though I may skip the oysters!)

Once again we seem to be eating the right foods. The optician tells me I have a cataract beginning in one corner of my eye so I will try to add more of these suggestions. Maybe that I'm 73 with an outdoor lifestyle doesn't help?

Hello Phil, pleased you found this post helpful and good to know you are eating the right foods.
I think, as we age, it is quite a common eye condition, and being around ultra violet light, doesn't always help!
WebMD have an article about Cataracts that you may be interested in reading.
Find it here

I see from your comment on the Collagen post you are in Menorca … enjoy the last few days of your holiday.
