Mint ... did you know !



Mint - did you know:
"There are several types of mint, each with its own subtle difference in flavour and appearance. The most popular type is spearmint, with its pointed, serrated leaves and a familiar refreshing flavour. It is commonly used to make mint sauce or jelly and in tea.

Peppermint has longer, darker leaves and a stronger flavour and is popular in sweets and confectionary. Another popular variety is apple mint, which has a subtle, fruit-tinged flavour and is popular in summer drinks.

Availability:
Mint is at its peak from May to September.

Choose the best:
Look for bright green, perky leaves that aren't wilting.

Prepare it:
Pull leaves from stem and run under cold water before shredding or adding whole to dishes. The smaller leaves at the top of the sprig are sweeter and great for garnishing salads and soups with.

Store it:
Store fresh mint in the fridge in a sealed plastic bag for up to 3 days.

Cook it:
Use mint in a variety of dishes including fruit salads, stuffing's, tabbouleh and for Thai dishes including soups and curries."

I always have mint available. We always had it in my home when I was growing up. I'll have to make that delicious salad!

Hello Jan, When I was a kid I remember, in our back yard, we had a mint plant. Mother would send me out to get a few fresh leaves for tea she was making. It is such a wonderful plant. Your post today reminds me of that and puts me on a mission to see if I can find fresh mint at the grocery. I absolutely must make the mint and tomato salad using your recipe! Thank you for this! Thank you also for your recent comment on my blog and letting me know your Covid restrictions have been lifted a little more. That is good news! mint is so liked by me and hubby
we use it regularly in season and to save it for later we wash and dry it so it's powder can be used in dishes or as herb in tea

I adore mint and grow it. In addition to cooking I also often will use it in a flower vase with a bloom that has no foliage. And it gives a wonderful fragrance (and roots easily, although since it spreads so much, I don't see me doing another planting!)

I have overwintered both pineapple and orange mint for three years. I just purchased chocolate and peppermint a few days ago. The chocolate is still looking OK, but the peppermint, which I paid a ton for, looks like it isn't going to make it after I transplanted it. Fresh mint is always best, and I try to keep some in water on my window sill. thanks for the recipes, too, Jan.

I love mint and it is so easy to grow, although it will take over the garden if not confined well. I like bunches of it in a glass in my kitchen for a bit of greenery, too.
