Friday Five : Did You Know ?

1. Your Orange Carrots are Purposely Bred Mutations

The modern orange carrot didn’t exist before the 17th century. Instead, it was brought introduced in the late 16th century by Dutch growers (popular belief claims this was partly to honor the country’s flag, which included orange. and also to celebrate the royal name, which was Orange-Nassau).

First, they took mutated yellow and white versions of the then-normal purple carrot. Then, they interbred them to create what we consider a regular carrot.

I did already know this one

2. An American accidentally invented the teabag

In 1908 a tea trader began sending samples of his tea to prospective clients in silken bags. The clients mistakenly thought you would use the bag instead of the standard metal strainer.

However, on finding that silk did not allow for a very good tea infusion, they complained to him that the mesh was not fine enough.

Surprised by the comments but sensing an opportunity, the merchant developed a gauze bag for the specific purpose of use as an everyday tea bag. Commercial production of the teabag began in the 1920s.

I didn't know this one

3. Space Fruit

The peach was the first fruit to be eaten on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin ate canned peaches on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission after they landed on the Sea of Tranquillity. It was part of their first space meal.

Fascinating

4. Everyone Hates Sprouts

There is a widespread global consensus that Brussel sprouts are the least loved of all vegetables, mainly due to many people finding them too bitter. This, however, is a great shame because they are highly nutritious and have very low amounts of fat or cholesterol.

I think you 'grow into' Brussels Sprouts, I know I did!

5. Chocolate Really is Heavenly

Historically first used and enjoyed by ancient Mayans. The name of the plant that produces chocolate, theobroma cacao, actually translates as ‘food of the Gods’, and it has been treated as such throughout history. The Mayans and the Aztecs (once they acquired some) even traded in chocolate. This is because it was so valuable to them, and only the wealthiest of its people could afford to drink it.

I did know this and current prices for chocolate are still high!

I hope you enjoyed these five facts - did you know any of them?
Do please share your thoughts in the comments.

  10. so that's how tea bags came in to being! I am skeptical about the tinned peaches though, as all food taken into space was specially prepared and transported in sealed packaging, sealed so as not to escape into the zero gravity and damage the spacecraft and equipment.

  11. I love Brussels sprouts. Always have. I eat them at least twice a month. Didn't know about the rest, though, except the peaches. I'm a space junkie.

  12. You have a way to teach us in a curious way

  13. Some I knew, some I didn't. I still haven't grown into Brussel sprouts. My mother cooked them until they were grey and mushy and I cannot face them (despite liking cabbage that she cooked the same way).

  14. Can't stand Brussel sprouts but I did know about the first thing eaten on the moon.

  15. Yes, chocolate prices are too high. Artificially so. My wife likes chocolate, (who doesn't?), and she likes shoes too. I could not afford both for our anniversary. So I bought her a pair of shoes made of chocolate.

    God bless.

Hello and many thanks for you comment.
It was the Smithosian Magazine that said ...
Bacon cubes were among the meals stored in the lunar module. And it worked out that meal A, the first scheduled meal to be eaten on the Moon, consisted of bacon squares, peaches, sugar cookie cubes, pineapple grapefruit drink and coffee. They ate history’s first meal on Moon slightly ahead of schedule after landing at the Sea of Tranquility.

There is an article on space food that gives more details about packaging and how it varies including tubes, cans, and sealed plastic packages.
    Read it here

But wasn't that landing on the moon amazing :)

Once again many thanks for your comment Debbie (Rustic Pumpkin) I do hope you are keeping as cool as possible in our present UK heatwave.
    My good wishes.

    All the best Jan

  20. Hi jan,
As always, a super interesting article.
I didn't know the first 3 facts and I was really surprised by the story of the color of carrots.
As for Brussels sprouts, oddly enough, my grandchildren love them.
I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't like chocolate. I love it!
A big hug and all the best for you.

  24. I really enjoyed this, much of it i did not know. i "grew" into brussels sprouts and i love them now. baked in the oven with evoo, s&p....cooked until they are brown and crisp, so easy and so good!! i sometime shred them and but them into salad or sautee them that way!! i think some people don't like the way they are prepared. as for chocolate, i have not noticed the increase in price, but it matters not - the hubs is an addict. i never check the price, i just put it in the basket!!

  27. I love Brussel sprouts! But I know a lot of people who don't like them. I think some people just need to try them as adults. They were prepared different when I was a kid. I did not know that about the tea bag. How interesting! Thanks for sharing. :)

  29. I did not know any of them although since I don't know anyone that likes brussel sprouts I would have guessed that one :)

  30. These are fascinating. They say because brussel sprouts are bitter that some people don't like them because of a gene that makes them taste bitter items even stronger. I never checked the story behind it though.

  31. I had not heard most of those. Not surprised by Brussel sprouts. But I happen to like them. The Chick Fil A here serves them as a side.

Many thanks for your comment and yes, you are correct about the fact that some people find Brussels Sprouts too bitter because of a genetic reason, have a look at this article I've linked to below.
