Pressure Cooker or Slow Cooker or Air Fryer : Modern Kitchen Appliances

The idea for this post came from a comment received from Iris on this post here which featured recipes for slow cookers and also those who do not have a slow cooker. In part of her comment she said "My Mum had a "Schnellkochtopf", you call it pressure cooker." It made me think of my mum as she also used to use a pressure cooker. I just use a conventional oven, hob and microwave!

In 2026 there are many "modern kitchen appliances like slow cookers, pressure cookers, and air fryers which can now be combined into versatile multi-cookers, offering speed, convenience, and healthier cooking options.

Individual Appliance Overview

Slow Cookers: These appliances cook food at low temperatures over extended periods, making them ideal for tenderizing meats, developing deep flavors, and preparing soups or stews. They are energy-efficient and allow for hands-off cooking, but meals take several hours to complete.
Pressure Cookers: Using high-pressure steam, pressure cookers drastically reduce cooking times while retaining nutrients and moisture. They are perfect for beans, grains, and tougher cuts of meat, offering up to 70% faster cooking compared to traditional slow cooking methods.
Air Fryers: Air fryers circulate hot air rapidly to cook food, producing a crispy texture similar to deep frying but with significantly less oil. They are excellent for healthier versions of fried foods, roasting vegetables, and reheating leftovers quickly.

Combo Appliances

Modern multi-cookers integrate these functions into a single device, often including additional features like sautéing, steaming, baking, dehydrating, and sous vide.

Popular models include:
Instant Pot Duo Crisp 11-in-1: Combines pressure cooking, slow cooking, and air frying with 15 smart programs, EvenCrisp technology for 95% less oil, and a 6–8 quart capacity, allowing meals to cook up to 70% faster than traditional methods.

Ninja Foodi 11-in-1 FD302: Features TenderCrisp technology for juicy interiors and crispy exteriors, 6.5-quart pot, 4.6-quart air fryer basket, and 11 programmable functions including sous vide, bake, and dehydrate.

COMFEE’ 9-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker: Offers slow cooking, pressure cooking, rice cooking, steaming, and specialized functions like yogurt and cake making, with safety features and programmable presets.

Benefits of Multi-Cookers

Versatility: One appliance can replace multiple kitchen gadgets, handling pressure cooking, slow cooking, air frying, steaming, sautéing, and more.
Time Efficiency: Pressure cooking and air frying functions significantly reduce cooking times compared to traditional methods.
Healthier Cooking: Air frying uses minimal oil, while pressure cooking preserves nutrients.
Convenience: Smart programs, one-touch presets, and dual lids allow seamless switching between cooking modes.
Space-Saving: Reduces countertop clutter by combining multiple appliances into one unit.
Ease of Cleaning: Non-stick inner pots and dishwasher-safe components simplify maintenance.

Considerations When Choosing a Combo

Capacity: 6-quart models suit small to medium families; 8-quart or larger units are ideal for batch cooking.
Safety Features: Look for lid locks, auto pressure release, and overheat protection.
Cooking Functions: More functions provide flexibility but may require a learning curve.
Build Quality: Stainless steel construction and durable components ensure long-term use.
Accessories: Removable lids, air fryer baskets, and racks enhance versatility.

Conclusion

For home cooks seeking efficiency, versatility, and healthier cooking options, multi-cookers that combine slow cooking, pressure cooking, and air frying are highly recommended. They save time, reduce kitchen clutter, and allow preparation of a wide range of meals with minimal effort, making them a valuable addition to any modern kitchen."

Of course however (and whatever) we cook, what appliance we choose to buy/use is always a personal choice and in my opinion there is nothing wrong or nothing right . . . it's what suits you!

Do please share your thoughts in the comments section.

All the best Jan

  9. Thank you for this Jan. I use my slow cooker quite often. I have an air-fryer that after one or two dishes, is sitting on the shelf gathering dust! I really should get it down again. All the best, Denise.

  10. I have all three. I used to use my slow cooker all the time until I got my Instant Pot. Now that tends to be my first choice. I use my air fryer occasionally.

  11. I have a small slow cooker but never use it, it takes up too much bench space and if I want to cook something slowly over several hours I'll use the oven instead as it also warms up the kitchen in winter.

  12. Slow cooker, haven't used it this winter. Air Fryer, have used it on occasions only, prefer the oven mostly and chips we do our own, in oil. We get used to the taste and don't necessarily like the new way (Air Fryer)

  19. I use my oven as a slow cooker by using a Dutch oven. I have an instant pot, but I could do without it and don’t have an air fryer, but I know people love them.

  20. Great post, Jan! I am a slow cooker junkie! I tried the air fryer, but didn't use it enough. I gave it to my daughter who loves it. My mom used to have a deep fryer. We made crabs and fried chicken in it. So much oil! I don't see those around anymore! Haha!

  26. I have an instapot, and I like that I could pass on my old crockpot and have fewer appliances. My toaster oven is also an air fryer. The fewer appliances, the better since I need less place to store them. :)

  27. I had a pressure cooker years ago but it scared me. I like using my multi cooker and air fryer.
