Phoenix and Noblehead: A Cry for Help

NICE currently recommends an HbA1c of ≤ 7.5 per cent. For the period 2009-2010, the following results (from the National Diabetes Audit) were achieved in England.

HbA1c   % of Registered Type 1 Diabetics
>7.5        71.8
>10.0     17.0

These results are very similar to those found in the 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 audits. I don’t believe anyone seeing these results would state that they represent satisfactory outcomes with almost 72% of registered diabetics having out of control blood glucose levels and many must be crying out for help! Surely there must be some ‘in control’ Type 1 diabetics willing to spend some time to advise and help their fellow Type 1 diabetics. Two individuals immediately spring to mind with seemingly the time to commit to forum posts. It would be nice to read Phoenix and Noblehead of diabetes.co.uk making some contribution to reducing the awful statistics for Type 1 diabetics.

  3. Percentage of registered Type 1patients in England
    HbA1c >= 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) = 92.6%
    HbA1c > 7.5% (58 mmol/mol) = 71.3%
    HbA1c > 10.0% (86 mmol/mol) = 18.1%

    Percentage of registered Type 2 patients in England
    HbA1c >= 6.5% (48 mmol/mol = 72.5%
    HbA1c > 7.5% (58 mmol/mol) = 32.6%
    HbA1c >10.0% (86 mmol/mol) = 6.8%

    These results are very similar to those obtained in previous audit over the past 5 -6 years.
