Egg sales are soaring as families look for an alternative to sugary breakfast cereals, research suggests.

Britons bought six per cent more eggs during the first three quarters of this year compared with the same period in 2014.

If sales continue to grow at their current rate, they could eclipse records dating back to the 1950s – when a popular advertising slogan advised the nation to ‘go to work on an egg’.

The research, by analysts Kantar Worldpanel, suggested that fears over cholesterol in eggs are disappearing – with many families now considering them a healthy, high-protein breakfast.

It found 42 per cent of Britons now believe it is okay to eat six or more eggs a week, up from just 19 per cent in 2008. Since that year, egg sales have risen by 22 per cent.

Industry experts say that the return to popularity of eggs following health scares can be attributed to high protein diets and families turning their backs on sugary cereals for the first meal of the day.

  1. Eggs are just part of the family, we all like them, and eat them every day.

    Thanks

Eggs are a good way to start your day, so much more nutritious than the cereals.

  3. Awww, your granddaughter looks so cute Jan. Great information on the hedgehog. I have a picture of my parents and right next to it is a little figurine of a pair of hedgehogs. They loved them and had a family of hedgehogs visit their garden all the time. Consequently I am a hedgehog fan also :)

  4. Denise, many thanks for your comment.
Hedgehogs are great little creatures aren't they. Your figurine sounds lovely ... I too have a small hedgehog figure that sits on a hall table, one of the children bought it for me some years ago and I treasure it ... nicknamed 'Prickles' well why not!

And as you've kindly put your comment on this eggs post - I must just add hedgehogs like hard boiled eggs ... it's true! Read this here

There everyone - including hedgehogs - can benefit from eating eggs!

    All the best Jan
