A Perfect Cup of Tea and a slice of low carb Coffee and Walnut Cake

Well anyone who has been following this blog knows I just love my cup of tea!



Now us tea drinkers may have our own favourite brand of tea - or tea bag - but apparently in a survey done last year the nation's biggest tea peeve is, too much milk! Apparently when it comes to tea us Brits can be very particular.

In last years survey 2000 tea enthusiasts gave voice to their opinions on the subject ...

The worst thing you can do to a cup of tea? Add too much milk was the overwhelming response, with more than 64% of tea fans citing this as the greatest offence of all.

About 63% also complained about drinking from a stained mug, while 46% admitted their biggest tea turn-off was drinking out of a chipped cup.

Other ways to anger the British tea-drinking population? Forgetting to take the tea bag out before serving and being handed an overflowing, spilling drink. 


But, however you like your tea, there is nothing better than enjoying a cuppa, and perhaps a small slice of low carb cake, such as this one. I find it always goes down a treat, but do be careful, you will only need a small slice ... it is yummy and very filling!


coffee and walnut cake - a tasty low carb version

Ingredients:
100 grams of ground almonds
100 grams of walnuts
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon of melted butter
2 tablespoons of double (heavy) cream
1 tablespoon of instant coffee
100 grams of clotted cream

Method:
1. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.
2. Melt the butter, I used a Pyrex jug, add the eggs, cream.
3. Place 1 tablespoon of instant coffee in a cup and pour some boiling water over the coffee, keep water to a minimum, just enough to melt the coffee. Then add the dry ingredients and mix.
4. Microwave in a 700 watt for 5 minutes in a 6" x 3" micro-wave safe glass dish.
5. Allow to cool and cut in half. Spread on clotted cream and add walnut halves.

Serves 6-8, around five carbs per portion.

Please note this cake is very low in carbs,
but quite high in calories, so have a small slice !

  3. i am a tea LOVER, hot or cold, it's all i drink. i didn't see any real dry ingredients in this recipe, except baking powder, maybe i missed it!!!

  9. Hello Debbie, many thanks for both of your comments, yes the cup is a cute design!

    This cake is the low carb variety so uses ground almond as its base, I don't know if you have tried any of these recipes? The strawberry one is good too, and as it is low in carbohydrate does not raise blood sugar levels ...so important for my husband Eddie who is a Type 2 diabetic ... but as I also live the LCHF lifestyle I do enjoy a slice too! LOL!

    Certainly we do not have to have milk in our tea ... many prefer it without.
    Although if I drink tea without milk I prefer it a slightly weaker brew!

    You can't beat a cup of tea in a nice china cup can you ...

    It is so many years since I had sugar (or sweetener) in my tea (or coffee) that should anyone accidentally put it in my cup I just cannot drink it, it tastes far too sweet.

  12. Whenever I have a group of friends around for tea it always amazes how very differently they like their tea.. not too strong, very strong, not much milk, mostly milk, no sugar three sugars :) Was wondering how the very yummy 'coffee' cake would partner a cup of tea Jan :)

    Yes, we all like our tea (or coffee) served slightly differently and why not!
    I guess there is something good about just leaving a freshly brewed teapot, jug of milk (sugar and sweeteners) on a tray with plenty of cups, so friends can pour out the cup which suits them best.
    The low carb coffee cake, or indeed the macaroons compliment a cuppa well LOL!

  15. Hello Dina, I agree the tea/cake/biscuit formula is loved by a lot of people.
    I like to use the 'blue top' 4% fat milk, whereas some may prefer semi skimmed, or like you oat milk, rice milk etc.

    A cup of tea should be enjoyed just how each of us likes it ...

  21. I wish so much that I had learned early to drink tea, the English tea hour has always sounded so very civilized. Now I do like tea with lemon and honey but cannot imagine putting milk in it. I know you are low carb now, Jan, but did you enjoy high tea or is it called cream tea, at one time?

  24. Looks a lovely cake, but a coffee cake needs a cup of coffee with it! Much though I'm a tea drinker. I got so annoyed with too much milk in my tea I started drinking it black!

    Tea can, and should, be enjoyed as suits each of us, and of course there are so many leaf varieties to try to!
    Yes, us Brits are well known for our afternoon tea and cream teas. I can remember on my last visit to the West Country (some years ago now) enjoying a cream tea with delicious thick clotted cream. I think anyone who visits the West Country should consider giving it a try.
