Salmon Pie/Flan : The Low Carb Way

This low-carb pie, some may call it a flan, is the perfect all-in-one dish. It is quite filling and full of tasty surprises ... the picture shows it here with smoked salmon and a lot of fresh dill. However, you can of course use cured, boiled or grilled salmon. In fact, use what you like and have on hand, but remember to adjust the salt and spices accordingly. Another good thing is that this pie freezes well.

Ingredients:
Serves Four

6g carb per serving

Pie crust
180 ml almond flour
60 ml sesame seeds
60 ml coconut flour
1 tablespoon ground psyllium husk powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
3 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
1 egg
60 ml water

Filling
225 g smoked salmon
240 ml mayonnaise
3 eggs
2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
120 g cream cheese
300 ml grated (shredded) cheese

Simply served with a lovely side salad - who could resist a slice!

Did you know ... The history of flan begins with the ancient Romans. Eggs figured prominently in many Roman recipes. The flan prepared by the ancient Romans was quite different from the food eaten today. It was often served as a savoury dish, as in "eel flan", although sweet flans, made with honey and pepper, were also enjoyed. When the Romans conquered Europe, they brought their culinary traditions, including the flan, with them.

In the Middle Ages, both sweet and savoury flans (almonds, cinnamon and sugar; cheese, curd, spinach, fish) were very popular in Europe, especially during Lent, when meat was forbidden.

  3. Looks like a delicious dish. I often make my flans/quiches without a crust at all and they turn out well.

    Merry Christmas!

  4. Oh my, I haven't had a proper piece of salmon in ages. When I lived on coast, we had sooo much good fish. Here, not to much.
