Little Things

Little Things

There's nothing very beautiful and nothing very gay
About the rush of faces in the town by day
But a light tan cow in a pale green mead
That is very beautiful, beautiful indeed
And the soft March wind and the low March mist
Are better than kisses in a dark street kissed
The fragrance of the forest when it wakes at dawn
The fragrance of a trim green village lawn
The hearing of the murmur of the rain at play
These things are beautiful, beautiful as day
And I shan’t stand waiting for love or scorn
When the feast is laid for a day new-born
Oh, better let the little things I loved when little
Return when the heart finds the great things brittle
And better is a temple made of bark and thong
Than a tall stone temple that may stand too long

Orrick Johns  1887 – 1946

I found this on the internet, it fits in with how I am thinking these days. The world has been going in a direction I do not like, for some time, and I am going back. Back to a time when I was blissfully ignorant. In recent years I have spent too much time on the internet. I have seen things I wish I had not seen, heard things I wish I hadn't. I have seen a side of human nature I did not know existed for much of my life.
Can we go back in time, can we go back and live an uncomplicated life? Is shying away from the failing fake news newspapers and thoroughly corrupt main stream media a sign of weakness, or walking away from reality? Right now I have had all the reality I want for a while. I'm going back to the time, when I was too busy trying to create something of value, if only to me, family or friends.
Some say I look back with rose tinted glasses, that may be, but looking forward fills me with apprehension. Not for me you understand, but for our kids and grandchildren.
So, enough of the gloom and doom, and I will start paying more attention to Jan's advice, who has said countless times to me "why do you read so much stuff that depresses you" why indeed.

  1. the media has always been biased. there will be a hue and cry from the media if their interests are threatened. but they are less likely to take on big businesses that do wrong, mainly because they don't want to lose the advertisement revenue.

  3. Good thoughts, but we don't help ourselves if we let ourselves be depressed by what's going on. Valerie

  4. While the little things are good for us, in the time you only focused on those things, women were abused, people of color were oppressed, children were treated horribly. If we go back to ignoring the little things that colored lives so horribly, we have all lost. Find a balance.

  6. Beautiful poem firstly.

I agree wholeheartedly with this post.
I live my life how I like it to be. I know longer read the newspaper. I use the internet less and less. I communicate with like minded people, most younger than myself.
Am I content, yes very. Do I worry, no but I do feel concerned for future generations.
Will they cope, yes they probably will.

You will find your own way out of this situation and whatever that decision is it must be right for you.

  11. I don't watch or read much media hysterics anymore. I try to keep myself grounded with family and friends. We each have such a small sphere of influence, but within that sphere we can make a positive difference (I hope).

  12. Yes, I have been looking for a good, used time machine for a quite a while now! Wouldn't it be wonderful to go back to those wonderful, simpler times? I love the poem...how very true it is...great post!

  13. The little things are huge in my world. 'Small things for small minds' my ever-loving families says. Let them.

  14. That is one reason we enjoy living in the country in the woods. Don't even watch television.

  15. Jan's advice is right on. One thing I do everyday is go out for a walk with my camera and see what's out there. I come home excited. :)
Your photo is absolutely beautiful, I love it.

  16. Well...good luck with that. I too long for the simpler golden time.

  17. Those were the 70s for me...growing up then was amazing! Things are changing so fast and not all is the best of ways. Things seem to be going in directions I am not happy about either. But I can make my world happy! That is what I plan on doing daily...making my world happy. Thanks for your sweet comment about the goat painting. I am so happy how they turned out, and my niece having her own farm and having those animals I know she will love them for the babes room.

  18. I understand how you feel. While I cannot retreat from the world I can limit what I allow into my own home. That includes too much news (I need the basics but I don't need to hear the non-stop prattling of so called experts all day long) - I don't need to watch programs that are full of characters who disgust me or whom I would not allow into my home if they were real - and I now limit those folks I know who are constantly negative or full of "woe is me" - they are exhausting.
Life is all about choices - some we get to make for ourselves, some are foisted upon us - but it's up to each of us to make the best ones possible for our own lives and our peace of mind. Good luck.

  19. I fear our President (U.S.) is one of those causing the world to go askew. I would LOVE to go back to a simpler time, too, or to a place where prejudice, war, hatred, and fear were non-existent.

  20. I feel the same, Eddie. I long for a simpler time. Feeling I need to know what is going on in the world and not making myself sick is a full time job. My children and grandchildren, like you say, are what concerns me. Take care and listen to Jan. I'll try as well. ♥

  21. I agree, it seems the more technology we have, the more weird things have become. The little things can sill mean a lot. Great topic and hugs...RO

  23. "Why do you read so much stuff that depresses you?"

Find yourself a selection of blogs, or books, that make you feel better and stick with those. And most of all, have Faith, and pray.

    God bless.

  26. I totally understand. I get so bogged down with the news and politics and all the truly terrible things that are happening in the world. Sometimes I have to take a break from the internet, especially when my depression is bad. I do long for a simpler time. Things have never been perfect in this world, but it seems like they are so much worse now.

  29. I think we should shut down and shut off more often. Life sometimes becomes a burden to heavy to handle.

I switch off from all the nonsense that goes around us...or try to do so...I don't always succeed, unfortunately.
