Will It Be Over or Under ... in your home ?

Over the years this blog has certainly brought variety in it's posts. Whether it be articles and studies about diabetes and living the low carb lifestyle, to low carb recipe suggestions, and even our Saturday Night Is Music Night - there is variety - and they do say 'variety is the spice of life'...
But how about this one!

"Over or under? Toilet roll debate finally settled thanks to 128 year-old manual:"

You may have already read articles about this topic! Do you actually give it any thought!! Do you just leave it to whoever replaces the emptying toilet roll !!!

…  "Apparently, there are two types of people in the world.

As for how this is decided, it's all to do with toilet roll.

By now, you will have come across the age-old question:

Should your toilet roll hang over or under ?

Maybe this question has caused conflict in your own home. Perhaps you've ended a relationship or even disinherited a family member based on their toilet roll orientation.

It did seem as if there was no answer was in sight, but some good news just in: There is!

CHOICE magazine discovered a 128 year-old patent dating back to 15 September 1891. It helpfully included a detailed graph which was explicit in showing the paper being left up and over the roll, rather than hanging under.

According to the MailOnline , the magazine wrote: "Here at CHOICE, we're fearless in finding truth in the most complex consumer concerns... which is why we set out to provide a conclusive answer to the controversial question of whether to hang your toilet paper over or under the roll.

"So, at risk of permanently losing members, we're here to announce that 'over' is the correct way to hang toilet paper."

The number of responses to this bombshell revelation are testament to how heated this debate has become.

"Over. Under makes me uncomfortable," wrote one reader.

"Over. Because I'm not a monster," agreed someone else.

But over in camp "Under", someone else said: "Under all the way. It gives you better, quicker and easier one-handed control of the number of sheets used."

… Well, I don't know about you but sometimes we just put a toilet roll on a shelf and don't use a holder!!! How about you?

All the best Jan

  1. Well moms house has a paper holder that sits on the floor with several rolls in it and you just pick up the roll and go......at my house I have it on a reg holder and it has to be OVER. haha....When my kids lived at home I would have just been happy if they would have put it on the holder period. Over or under would have been fine. They could lean over and pull a roll from the basket beside to toilet, use it and then balance that roll on the cardboard piece that is left behind when the other roll is done.....WHY? It took just as long to balance it there as it would to have put it where it should have gone! BUT OVER.....haha

  3. I've learned to do it over when a roommate once asked my why I did it under. Now who is to say she was right and it seems I am just obedient!

  4. Most of the time it is under in my house, unless my husband puts the roll on then it is usually over. LOL!

  6. It's always over and if for some reason it is under, I'll turn it over. :)

  7. I don't care which way it hangs so long as there is some there when needed.

  8. The end of the roll must always be folded into a triangle like they do in hotels. Also, you should provide toilet papers individually packed in squares in a box so you can pull them out one at a time as you require. Give people a choice. It always confuses them.

    God bless.

  12. Over is definitely the preference in our home but one of our cats discovered what a great toy that makes and now we've switched to under! :)

  13. It can go either way at our house, it depends who replaces the roll. And they better replace the roll. ;-)

  16. That is very interesting Jan! How wonderful that the debate has finally been solved, lol! I am part of the "over" club and funny to find out that was how it all started, but it really is all personal preference! I always say that if we were all alike in this world, what a boring place it would be! So the spice of life is that there is no one else in the world just like you, and it is a fun discussion for sure to see what others think about the infamous toilet roll :) Blessings to you!

  17. Seems silly to worry about it. But if you have a puppy, it goes under to make it harder for him to run with the end of it.

  21. I personally like it over, but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter as long as there is some when needed.

  22. I shall be showing this diagram to my family as I'm fed up of having to change the toilet roll round to over when they've hung it under.

  23. I feel so smug now. I have been right all my life!

  24. It's long time ago but my grandparents outside loo at the top of the garden had squares of newspaper hanging from a rusty nail behind the door. True.

  25. The correct way is over, but the idea of how to replace an empty roll always seemed to elude the other residents of this household. Seems one needed to be an Einstein to adjust the spring so the roller could be removed. So when we remodeled the bathroom, I opted for a vertical holder. Just position the toilet roll hole over the vertical holder and drop. Toilet paper at the ready and now everyone is a Ph.D. =^,.^=

  29. Ours is over and that is because my husband is the only one who knows how to put a new roll into the complicated holder. I think I would choose under as it stays in place better.

    Have a great day

    Love Chrissie xx

  30. Under is easier for me to pull off. I even change it in public restrooms if I can!
