We will remember them, and say thank you to the brave men and women,
past and present who fight to preserve our freedoms.
We shall remember you at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance.
In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write the now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'.

...the poppy is a beautiful symbol of remembrance.
ReplyDeleteI have no words, just bowing my head.
ReplyDeleteLovely post! We honor our vets on Veterans's Day as well. It is good to remember those who served and have given their lives for our freedom which we are all thankful for today. I am with Sandi, I simply bow my head.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing this poem a few years ago, I did a bit of research and learned that poppies have to be seeded in areas where there is lots of movement and activity, just like the battlefields in WWI. This is a beautiful remembrance of the day, Jan. It's both poignant and telling. Much of the world should remember this day and tomorrow, Armistice Day, too.
ReplyDeleteGreat remembrance!
ReplyDeleteLest we forget. The church choir were all wearing their poppies this morning.

ReplyDeleteI love that poem and I love that we remember our veterans at this time. I wish our Government/s would also treat them better for the sacrifices they've made.
ReplyDeleteYes, we will remember them.
ReplyDeleteI have an empty bag of poppy-seeds right here at my PC, hanging on the wall. It was a pressie from a friend when we were in Perth 2015 (100 years Gallipoli).
ReplyDeleteMany wore a poppy on their chest as symbol of respect.
Lovely post to honour those who fought for our freedoms.
