Tips on How to Keep Warm in Winter

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere we are in winter and somedays the weather can be rather cold! In today's post you can read a few tips on how to keep warm in winter ... and if you have any tips do please share them in the comments section.

1. Dress in Layers
Bundle up. Wear long underwear, sweaters, and even hats indoors. Remember the days of “sleeping caps”? They make sense! Yes, wear a cap or hat to keep your head warm. If you’re headed outside, cover your face with a scarf.

2. Keep Your Feet Warm
Consider wearing socks and slippers when you are indoors and for the outdoors, it helps to insert foam liners in your boots or hiking shoes to give your toes an extra layer of insulation against the cold earth. Warm feet and hands really do help you sleep better.

3. Heat Up Your Bed
Use a (safe) electric blanket that turns itself off. A hot water bottle with a wool or fleece cover may be an even cheaper and safer option.

4. Harness the Sun
During the day, open the blinds and curtains on the south-facing windows—and let in the warming sunlight. At night, close the blinds and curtains to insulate your home better.

5. Keep the Kitchen Cozy
Bake something in the oven, either dinner or a dessert, the warmth from the oven and the wonderful aroma of what you are cooking warms you.
Enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee or how about a hot
chocolate ...
Also, a crock pot (slow-cooker) of soup on the go is great during the cold months.

6. Block Drafts
For example put something at the bottom of outside doors—you can just feel the cold air pour in. You can buy a fancy roll or just use a blanket or towel.

7. Stay Active
Keep active - cooler/cold months can be a good time to clean out cupboards, closets, garages, etc. Anything to keep active and help you keep warm.

8. Humidify Your Home
A humidifier won’t make the temperature higher, however, it may make it feel slightly warmer. Water vapour from the humidifier slightly increases the air’s ability to hold heat.

9. More Ideas
If you have any please share them in the comments ... thank you!

  4. As you know the cold ocean wind blows something wicked here. On my front and back doors I have insulated curtains hanging to help keep it warmer. Also for the doors I have insulated draft blockers that I made. For my windows I use pipe insulation tubes. All this is very inexpensive and helps with keeping the house warm and the heating bill down. Great information on keeping warm.

  6. A cup of tea (or coffee) warms the soul. Or even hot cocoa. Plus a good book, a puzzle or a fun game with others is good for the brain too. :) Thanks for this list Jab.

  12. A heated mattress pad is amazing, because hot air rises, right? Was about $70 for a double from WalMart online. Great for pre=heating the bed too. On low is best. Shuts off after 10 hours. If the head of your bed is against an outside wall, get a 2" piece of foam the size of a body pillow. Put the taped together foam inside the body pillow and hang it on the wall like a headboard. Stocking beanie cap is at the bedside. Linda in Kansas

  17. Happy New Year to you Jan. These are terrific ideas for staying warm. One way I add it to have a heated throw or heated shawl and put that on my legs and feet while I sit and watch television. I also have a foot massager that has heat and massage as one function. The new one I have doesn't heat much but every little bit helps.

  18. I also like the warmth from the oven. Completely agree on keeping our feet warm.
    Great post, Jan ❄

  19. Tolo many people economise on heating, to the detriment of good health and resistance to disease. It is a tragedy that so many people feel they are forced to take such measures.

  21. Mittens do a better job of keeping your hands warm rather than gloves. Insert hand warmers into your mittens and your hands will be happy.

  22. I do many of these, but you reminded me, I need a cup of tea. Now.

  24. Great tips for keeping warm in the cold. I find that wearing a scarf makes a huge difference, even indoors. I also have a flannel pillow filled with rice that I heat up in the microwave and use when I sit reading or writing. It adds a bit of extra warmth and is so soothing. I can mold it around my neck or shoulders.

Your blog is very interesting. Here in Galicia, it's also very cold and damp, chilling you to the bone, during this winter. The advantage is that summer is lovely.

    Happy New Year!
    Have a great day!

  34. Warm hands and feet are a must, I have a blanket over the back of my chair and use that over my legs if need be. I've used it a couple of times lately even though it's summer but the evenings have sometimes been a bit cool

  35. I have trouble with my hands staying warm even inside, not sure if it ia a circulation problem or what. My sister bought me some gloves that have the fingertips open so that I can wear them and still type on the computer and yes i am wearing them right now :)

  36. These are good tips. I tend to feel cold indoors and I don’t think it’s responsible to turn the heat up higher than I’ve already got it. I usually wear a light jacket over my long sleeved top right now. I’ve got a light blanket over my feet while I read.
