'Easy ways to cut down on microplastics in your diet'

Microplastics are in what we eat, drink, wear and even the air we breathe !

So how worried should we be about microplastics, and can we change our food choices to limit our exposure?

There is an interesting article here you may wish to read, but below is a list of seven easy ways you can cut down on microplastics in your diet.

1. Don't heat food in plastic containers

2. Drink water from a glass rather than plastic bottle

3. Swap out plastic tea bags for loose‑leaf

4. Buy loose fruit and vegetables

5. Avoid vacuum‑packed meat and fish

6. Choose filtered tap water over bottled water

7. Replace plastic storage containers, utensils and chopping boards over time

Important
With regard to this post scientists have yet to fully understand the potential long-term impact of microplastics on human health, and while experts summarise that there may well be risks to our health, in 2022, The World Health Organization explained it's hard to reach definitive conclusions because of a lack of reliable data regarding microplastics. An issue they're currently, trying to address

We perhaps need to be aware of the potential risks and carry out reasonable steps to try to avoid our exposure ... do please share your thoughts in the comments below.

All the best Jan

  12. Plastic teabags?? Mine are paper and can be composted. I'll keep my plastic storage containers, because these days glass ones are often too heavy, paper or cardboard are no good since mice can eat into them, ditto cockroaches and since I never scrape into them with metal utensils the plastic stays good and not all scratched up.

  13. Good advice and easily done for me, but I don't drink tap water I drink it from a bottle or put the water in a glass sometimes.

  16. Avoiding plastic ingestion is increasingly difficult, as it's made its way right though the food chain. We can all do our best to limit it, though.

  17. Good advice but not always practicable. Many foods/drinks already come in plastic - milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, soft drinks (cola), cereals, pasta and rice etc ... Even some peoples' character is plastic, I find.

    God bless.

  26. Thanks for sharing such important advice: as you mentioned, we've to cu down microplastic in our diet. Unfortunately most Italian pack food with plastic film ... I disagree on this, as China is global center for plastic film production, and certain cheap, uncertified films made in China may contain toxic plasticizers.
    Great post, Jan!

  27. We already do all of these things and have done so for several years. We also don't eat at any fast food places that use plastic, avoid Starbucks etc. or bring our own containers. I have mash bags that I bring to the farmers market so the loose fruit and vegetable aren't put in a plastic bag. I don't buy pasta in plastic packaging anymore, but only in cardboard packaging. I've changed my laundry detergent from plastic bottle to one that is sold in aluminum bottles. There is actually quite a lot one can do, but unfortunately not enough people who do it.

  31. Thanks for this information, jan, that is so important!

  32. I do all of the above, but there are still so many things that come in plastic containers. There should be more control by governments so plastics in food items get phased out. Thanks Jan.

  33. We have slowly replaced our plastic containers with glass and ceramic over years. Hopefully it is helping.
