What's Your Choice - skimmed, semi-skimmed or full fat ?

"Bombshell study reveals which milk is healthiest - skimmed, semi-skimmed or full fat

Milk is a household essential but now it's finally been revealed which one is best for you. While you might have a personal preference, experts have debunked the myth about which milk has the best health benefits.

Scientists from the University of Toronto conducted a three-month study, where participants ate full-fat dairy products three times a day. There is a wider choice of milks to choose from than ever before, but which type would be most beneficial to your health? The results found that consuming full-fat dairy made no difference to weight gain compared to a control group. However, it did lead to lower blood pressure and a boost in bone-building calcium, protein and vitamin D.

The experts concluded that older people who may have more brittle bones should consume full-fat dairy products, Daily Mail reports.

Full-fat milk is an easy way to incorporate this into the diet, the experts added. Whole milk contains essential vitamins which other forms of milk do not have.

While it is the highest in calories, nutritionist Grace Kingswell says it is still only 4% fat.

She adds that the risk of a few extra calories and fat is worth it for the nutritional benefits.

Not only this but she says full-fat milk is more filling so by consuming it, people will feel fuller for longer.

Semi-skimmed milk is the most popular option in the UK, with around 80% of people opting for this choice. The milk has less fat meaning people will miss out on some of the vitamins the whole milk option offers.

However, research from Southern Medical University in China found those who regularly drank semi-skimmed milk over a 13-year period were around a third less likely to be diagnosed with anxiety.

Finally, skimmed milk is the lowest-calorie and lowest-fat option.

Despite this, Kingswell says skimmed milk contains less vitamin D than full-fat milk, which helps the body absorb the crucial nutrient, reports Daily Mail.

She says: "I would never not recommend full-fat milk or yoghurt," she says. "It contains far more of the nutrients we need compared to the lower-fat versions."

Kingswell adds: "The fat contains all the beneficial vitamins - A, D, E and K, which the low fat versions don't have.""

Do please share your thoughts and choice of milk in the comments section. My choice is to drink full fat milk but appreciate there are those who choose not to drink it. Many people can’t tolerate milk because they are unable to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products and lactose intolerance affects around 65% of the world’s population. Others choose not to consume milk or dairy products due to dietary restrictions, health concerns or ethical reasons. This has led to a wide variety of non-dairy milk alternatives available in our shops/stores.

Low fat...1 or 2%. Usually just 1%. Thank you so much for sharing this information, Jan, your posts are extremely helpful, and very much appreciated!
I hope you have a lovely week ahead, dear friend.

I read another article recently that also encouraged some fat in the milk. We use semi-skimmed.

...I don't have milk often. I like 1% and my Sweetie likes skim, so we have skim!

Interesting! We've been buying 2% for years, but now that I'm older, I probably will switch to whole milk. Thanks for sharing!

I had heard full milk was better too, so I started drinking full milk, then when hubby had to go on a low carb diet and I joined him, I went with Fairlife milk because it had only 6 carbs instead of 12 per cup. Then doctor told me to go low fat diet because my cholesterol is not good, so now I don't know what to do.

I have full fat milk, cheese and yoghurt always. I dislike "diet" varieties of anything because the flavour from "full fat" (or sugar) needs to be replaced somehow and they do this with chemicals. Why would I want to fill my body with artificial chemicals?

P.S. a bone density scan showed strong solid bones with no loss at all even at 74.

sadly we take whole milk because where we live it is the only option ,though while we stay in Islamabad we use packet milk that show least fat on the packaging and hope it is true

That’s interesting; I actually choose whole milk specifically for the vitamin D and everything else. Every now and then, though, I do have oat milk in my coffee.

I drink semi-skimmed milk but think I will return to full-fat - it's a more satisfying taste.

Interesting post, Jan. I don't drink milk as it contains hormones and antibiotics. I don't trust it.In addition to this, humans are the only mammals that regularly consume milk in adulthood.

Interesting. I usually drink no fat skim milk. But I guess according to this study full fat might be better. It's just so rich though.

I don't drink milk and only cook with it. If I'm doing that, it's 2 percent.

I was interested in that study and would like to hear if more studies like this will be taking place. I've always been nervous about consuming full fat dairy because I don't want my LDL to keep rising. I generally buy 2% (your semi-skimmed) milk that has added calcium.

Very interesting study! I've always love milk, but I usually only have it in my cup of coffee these days. For that I opt fpr half and half milk--half cream and half regular milk-- so I guess I ahve been doing the right thing for my bones!

Hi Jan,I forgot to mention why I consume lower fat milk. In both 2021 and 2022, I had a case of diverticulitis. After the 2022 episode, I was trying to find out as much as I could on how to prevent another episode.
At this time, in both cases, I was drinking full fat milk.
One of the things that was recommended is to opt for a lower fat milk. So this is why I changed.
Thank goodness I haven't had another episode of diverticulitis.
This plus hardly eating any beef has helped me tremendously.

I had heard about this study and I thought it made a lot of good sense. I changed over to full fat milk and yogurt several months ago. But I barely drink milk as it makes me very wheezy. I have no problem with yogurt. All in moderation I guess. Thanks Jan and all the best :) Denise

We buy 2% milk ( semi-skimmed I suppose it would be called). I tried almond milk this week but I don't care for it and ended up passing it along to my GD.

Generally semi[skimmed for me.

In the past, I have used both full milk and then 1% milk, but for the pst several months I have used almond milk exclusively for drinking and on oatmeal and in smoothies. I do buy full-fat milk on occasion especially for baking.

We are a semi skimmed milk family. I would be happy to have some full fat milk too.

I don't drink a lot of milk, but I make my own yogurt (I make a gallon at a time, which lasts 2 weeks or so). I used to use 2% skim milk, but have gone to using whole milk. Hopefully it's better for me.
