Sweeteners : A Helpful Low Carb / Keto Guide


Guide to low carb sweeteners:
"It can be incredibly confusing when you are just starting to live sugar free. Part of the ethos of living sugar free and low carb is to give up the sweet treats on a regular basis and to reset our taste buds. But being able to make a sweet treat occasionally is a deal breaker for many of you contemplating even starting. If you do want a cake, a dessert or a sweet treat, it is better to have a few good sugar free recipes on hand than to reach for a high carb snack.

With so many sweeteners now on the market, which one do you choose? 
Of course there are also other questions … for instance

How much sweetener to use?
Which sweeteners taste best?
Why is it hard to give up sugar?

Do you use a low-carb sweetener? 
You may have a favourite!
Perhaps you prefer one to use in drinks, but another for baking! 

We bring a variety of articles (and recipe ideas) to this blog, but not all may be suitable for you. If you may have any food allergies, or underlying health issues these must always be taken into account. If you are a diabetic and not sure how certain foods may affect your blood sugars, test is best, i.e. use your meter.

  3. A work in progress here. I managed to give up adding salt (decades ago) but am less sucessful with sugar.

  4. Yes I do use sweeteners. I've tried several types (stevia, sucralose etc..). No problems. Now I'm using Splenda, as my near by supermarket imports it and sells it fairly cheap.

  5. I'm currently looking for a low carb artificial sweetener. Unfortunately I realize that Splenda is not and is what I've been using. Thank you for this information, Jan.

  6. My husband is a diabetic so I have worked with splenda which works out well in baking other things, but I also try different things-xyltiol, stevia, suarve and more but I do love good honey and molasses, maple syrup etc in very small quantities.

  12. I stay away from sugar most days, but once a week I allow myself a treat, homebaked, with sugar or honey. I dislike the idea of artificial stuff.

  13. I use cologran, but only in my coffee.
    In most sweet recipes I use sugar, only half the recommended amount.
    I do try to curb my sweet tooth! 😉

  14. I like to use Stevia in my tea as the Stevia is a natural sweetener. It can also be use in baking. The problem was not having brown sugar or confectioner's sugar to make frostings or icings for cakes. I found a brand called Swerve which makes granulated sugar, brown sugar, and the confectioner's sugar. Swerve is Erythritol which is a natural alcohol sugar. Like Stevia it has no calories. Now we can have our low-carb cake with the trimmings. Sadly, the Swerve is on the pricey side.

  19. Don't use sweetener or sugar in my tea, but use Monk fruit or Stevia for baking and sometimes honey in my yogurt.

  20. I use Swerve, a sugar alcohol. I made mull berry jam with it this year and cannot taste the difference!
