There are times when only chocolate will do !

It's quite often said to me … but surely you don't eat chocolate Jan?
To which I answer, yes I do, but only a square or two! I go on to explain that it is the dark chocolate variety and always 70% + cocoa.

Yes, dark chocolate (cocoa), "is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health. It's made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet.

Studies show that dark chocolate (not the sugary type) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.

Dark Chocolate is Very Nutritious:
If you buy quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, then it is actually quite nutritious.
It contains a decent amount of soluble fibre and is loaded with minerals.

A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa contains:
11 grams of fibre.
67% of the RDA for Iron.
58% of the RDA for Magnesium.
89% of the RDA for Copper.
98% of the RDA for Manganese.
It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium."

You may not want to do any baking, so why not just enjoy a square of dark chocolate. Many studies have shown that dark chocolate is incredibly healthy, and may reduce your risk of several diseases.

Dark chocolate is loaded with fibre and antioxidants, as well as minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper and manganese. Plant compounds in dark chocolate have been shown to lower blood pressure, protect against heart disease, improve brain function and protect the skin against the sun’s harmful UV-rays. To make the most of the health benefits, it is recommended to eat dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70–85% or higher. A piece of dark chocolate is especially delicious when enjoyed with a good cup of coffee.

Bottom line: Dark chocolate contains high amounts of fibre, antioxidants and minerals. It may reduce the risk of heart disease, improve brain function and protect the skin from the sun, read more

I have often thought that chocolate and coffee should be one of the food groups. Their molecular structure differ in only chemical group. I wrote a post about it and it was utterly brilliant.

Dark chocolate is indeed "Food of the Gods".

YUM.... That cake looks SO good... We love Dark Chocolate --and try to eat one square of it each day since it's so healthy for us....

Hope you are are staying healthy during these scary times. No Covid 19 cases in our county so far --but we are being very very careful through this Virus scare. We also are not panicking --and definitely not hoarding items/food, etc... People can be nuts at times like this.

Stay healthy and safe.
Hugs,
Betsy

I wish I liked chocolate more. I like it some and some kinds (brownie, chocolate chip cookies), hot cocoa, but not like a hard core chocolate fan. Still, some of these look really great!

Oh, I've died and gone to heaven with the post. Around Christmas time Lidl has a 97% dark chocolate. It is an acquired taste but I soldiered on through and I love it now, but can only eat 1 square a day. Take care, Sue xx

Thank you to Jan for the lovely comments on my blog. Thank you, too, for this terrific post on one of my favourite foods. I have been cutting my dark organic choc. consumption by 50% as a Lenten discipline (and to help me lose a little weight)... but it's great to be reminded of the benefits. Incidentally, do you also find it hard to get bitter dark chocolate bars these days? I love the bitter variety - and don't need the sweetness.

Hello Caroline, thanks for your comments and question about dark chocolate.
I last bought the 85% dark chocolate, and noticed there was some 70% available too.
I haven't needed to buy any recently, but am wondering with the present shopping demands due to the coronavirus supplies may be low.
I hope you may be able to get some and enjoy a square soon.
My good wishes.

All the best Jan
