The effect of statins on average survival in randomised trials, an analysis of end point postponement
Objective To estimate the average postponement of death in statin trials.
Setting A systematic literature review of all statin trials that presented all-cause survival curves for treated and untreated.
Intervention Statin treatment compared to placebo.
Primary outcome measures The average postponement of death as represented by the area between the survival curves.
Results 6 studies for primary prevention and 5 for secondary prevention with a follow-up between 2.0 and 6.1 years were identified. Death was postponed between −5 and 19 days in primary prevention trials and between −10 and 27 days in secondary prevention trials. The median postponement of death for primary and secondary prevention trials were 3.2 and 4.1 days, respectively.
Conclusions Statin treatment results in a surprisingly small average gain in overall survival within the trials’ running time. For patients whose life expectancy is limited or who have adverse effects of treatment, withholding statin therapy should be considered.

Love those flowers Jan. Very interesting article. Years ago I tried at least 3 statins and all gave me bad muscle/joint pain side effects. This year my Dr. talked me into another one and I had memory issues and terrible nightmares. Later I read that those are both side effects of that particular statin. I stopped taking after 3 weeks, and will never, ever take again. They just aren't right for me.
ReplyDeleteScary but informative information.
ReplyDeleteLove the beautiful flowers ☕
...my doc prescribed a statin years ago and things have been fine.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI was on statins for a short time but the side effects were horrendous. No more for me.
ReplyDeleteInteresting article. Thanx.
ReplyDeleteGods bless.
I am glad to know this. I took a statin for a week and my body was in pain and then became stiff. I tried another for three days and the same pain returned. I tried the third and gave up. There is a statin or something that does the same thing that is a liquid or injection, and only has to be taken every two weeks. So, I am waiting on that. It is expensive but if numbers are high enough, insurance will pay for it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I had no idea that their impact was so small.
ReplyDeleteHave heard of Statin...The flowers are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLovely bouquet of flowers, Jan. I read this with interest because before reading this article, I had no idea what statins were. Guess I'm lucky.
ReplyDeleteInteresting stuff.
ReplyDeleteThese flowets look so pretty!
ReplyDeleteInteresting about the statins. Beautiful flowers Jan! :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting whilst a little concerning. Beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeleteI have been on statins for a number of years with no adverse effects. They have dramatically reduced my cholesteral level so I find the results of the research surprising.
ReplyDeleteInteresting read. I really loved those flowers Jan. Hope your week is going well. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for this info...I know quite a few people who are on statins, and they have rather mixed opinions as to how many benefits they gain from taking them.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you are all well there.😊😊 It is good to be back!
Have a great day!
Hugs xxx
The fall colors of the flowers are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteInteresting info Jan, my husband takes a statin, will forward this info to him.
ReplyDeleteFor me I do not have high cholesterol, however, several years ago hundreds of white spots were found on my brain MRI. Of course there were three reasons to have spots. Cancer Alzheimer's, or cholesterol. Cancer and Alzheimer's were ruled out. I was put on a statin and monitored. My last brain MRI 2 years ago showed the white spots are almost gone. The Docs figure it is just another part of lupus. I love the flowers. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteThat is very interesting - thanks very much!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just LOVE fall foods. Or isn't it funny how a reg meal can have that fall like TASTE and LOOK with just the season change. Course I love adding pumpkin to the diet this time of year. Matter of fact, thinking of making some pumpkin cookies today!!!! Oh YUM....Its funny, through this whole COVID thing I gained no weight and I have been making bread and baking sweets. Stop making bread and baking sweets, and I put on 3 lbs!! Then it hit me, I drink a lot of tea, normally unsweet with orange slices squeezed in it, but about four weeks ago I went back to sweet, cause I just like it better. BAM....3 lbs like that. So back to unsweet it is.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. I have leg cramps, and couldn't figure out what it was! I got off them. sigh.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting!!!
