Statement attributable to: Steven J. Stack, M.D., President, American Medical Association
“The American Medical Association (AMA) commends the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its decision today to remove partially hydrogenated oils, the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, from all U.S. food products. Last year, we issued a letter in support of the FDA’s efforts to restrict trans fat and also urged the FDA to take additional steps to impose strict limits on the amount of trans fat in processed foods. Today, we support the FDA’s move to eliminate trans fat as an important component in a multipronged strategy needed to help improve public health.
“With ample scientific research linking the consumption of trans fat to dangerous health effects, including heart attack and stroke, the AMA believes that removing trans fat from our nation’s food supply will help reduce the risk of preventable diseases and ultimately save lives.
“The FDA’s action to remove trans fat aligns with the AMA’s ongoing efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and improve health outcomes. Last week, the AMA adopted policy at its 2015 Annual meeting supporting state and federal legislation banning the use of artificial trans fat in the U.S.
“The AMA is fully committed to improving the health of the nation and we will continue to support efforts and advocate for policies that help reduce the burden of preventable diseases—leading to a healthier nation and reducing health care costs.”

I am NOT a fan of the AMA.. they are a joke! - www.domesticgeekgirl.com
FDA did it mostly because they didn't want to be sued, sent your applouses to Dr.Kummerow:
"Well, as it turns out, the agency’s decision comes right on the heels of a lawsuit filed by Dr. Fred Kummerow, a 99-year old heart disease researcher who has been studying heart disease for about 60 years. He first wrote about the health hazards of trans fats all the way back in 1957. Dr. Kummerow filed a citizen petition with the FDA in August of 2009 to have trans fats banned, based on the scientific evidence of harm. The agency is legally required to respond within 180 days. Four years later, no response had been issued, so Dr. Kummerow resorted to suing the agency.
The lawsuit, Kummerow vs US Food and Drug Administration et al, was filed August 9, 2013 with the Illinois Central District Court. Listed defendants include Kathleen Sebelius, Michael M Landa, US Dept of Health and Human Services, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Margaret Hamburg, and the FDA.
According to an August 13, 2013 report by FoodNavigator.com, Dr. Kummerow “is seeking a judgment declaring that the FDA’s failure to ban the use of partially hydrogenated oils… and its delay in issuing a final response to his 2009 petition, violate the Administrative Procedure Act and the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act.” Dr. Kummerow also sought “an order compelling the FDA to respond to his petition and to ban partially hydrogenated oils ‘unless a complete administrative review finds new evidence for their safety.’”

An individual may won a fight, it is refreshing to know. Life keeps me in a cautiously optimistic mood. We are not facing a totally solid wall, there is always a hope, and a lot could be done on an individual level.
Thanks Galina, for Fred Kummerow to take on the FDA shows what an amazing guy he is especially seeing he is now 100 years old.
The late Mary Enig was another who campaigned against trans fats in the seventies it's a pity she did not live long enough to see her research totally vindicated by the climb down from the FDA.
See this Mary Enig article
Cheers
