interesting to read this today. i just viewed a commercial on t.v. about a product/spray you should wash fresh fruit and vegetables in before consuming. it seemed there was a lot of dirt and wax that does not come off by simply rinsing alone!
Organic food is very expensive here. I do try, but cannot always stretch to the extra cost.
Farmer's markets are good and when I grow our own vegies I do grow them organically.

It's so sad that there are more and more pesticides and other chemicals being used and people have more and more diseases due to it - skin and respiratory conditions, cancers, etc. Governments should do more to protect the consumers and ban a lot of the worst chemicals. I not only grew my own tomatoes, I made my own pesticide in the blender in the kitchen. It worked and I was 100% sure I got no harmful pesticides. I like to leave the peeling on tomatoes, so this worked out well.

Jan I think that the Local Government should control the use of pesticides on crops and then we consumers should put into practice what you tell us.

Since 2010 producers of packaged organic food have been required to use the UE organic logo. Although I buy fruits and veggies at the farm, I always wash fruits and veggies with vinegar solution. As you mentioned, the problem may be cross-contamination in the countryside.
