DUK the diabetes charity, sleepwalking towards a public health disaster !

An article in the Daily Mail tells us today. "Ignorance of diabetes is 'a disaster in waiting': 70% of Brits don't know disease can lead to amputations and blindness"

"The lack of awareness comes despite the fact that those with the illness are 36 per cent more likely to die in any given year than those without it of the same age. Diabetes UK commissioned the survey as part of a £2million campaign funded in partnership with Tesco to raise awareness of the risk factors.

The charity’s chief executive Barbara Young said the aim is to ‘lay to rest the myth’ that type 2 diabetes is a mild condition.‘This is a misconception that is wrecking lives and is the reason that as a country we are sleepwalking towards a public health disaster of an almost unimaginable scale,’ she said."

That's very rich coming from the chief executive Barbara Young. I ask myself, who has done more to perpetuate the gruesome outcomes and lamentable HbA1c results, published in the NHS audits for diabetics than Diabetes UK ? And Tesco, what a paragon of virtue that outfit is. Anyone who believes Tesco, is interested in diabetics, is in need of psychiatric counseling. Jeez you couldn't make it up. If Tesco really want to help, they can stop selling the high starch/sugar junk that fills most of their shops, and Diabetes UK can stop promoting the diet of slow death.

The hypocrisy in all this stinks like four pound of condemned veal, and to think, Barbara Young is paid a hundred grand a year plus expenses to peddle this bilge ! If anyone is sleep walking it's Barbara Young and her charity has been in a self induced coma for years. As I so often say, welcome to the crazy world of diabetes.

I tried commenting on the DIABETES UK facebook page and my comments were all moderated off within minutes.
It really should be possible to explain to people how they can reduce their reliance on diabetes medications through at nutritional approach. We should be able to provide links to the Swedish experience or to other sites where up to date science based evidence is available.
Just look at Tesco's typical special offers and you must question the integrity of Diabetes UK in getting into bed with them as sponsors for their Diabetes Awareness campaign.

DUK is a health hazard. They certainly affect my blood pressure adversely. The "leading diabetes charity"? Leading to what?

As I have been saying here and elsewhere for years-these people do not represent me. I didn't vote for them -they are not up for election but they have undue influence with the government and the NHS. When I get GPs , nurses and occasionally even consultants quoting them at me, it makes me really mad I always take the opportunity to make my own views known and ensure they know that a substantial number of diabetics share these views.

To me, they are our worst enemies because they are posing as friends and the real issues are hidden behind the meaningless sound bites we get from Baroness Young and her crew. We may rant about Big Pharma and the Food Industry but at least they don't pretend to be charities working for the good of diabetics. Diabetes UK is just in the business of keeping Diabetes UK going and becoming bigger and more influential -but certainly not in our interests.

Does anyone know of a small worthwhile diabetes charity which hasn't yet lost touch with those it was formed to help? I would happily support them. Why shouldn't people be allowed to criticise them? If we can criticise government {and I hope this is still allowed} why not DUK?

It's disgraceful, disheartening and disgusting.

Of course all the Daily Mail readers will believe what the printed word says. How could the Daily Mail, DUK, Tesco (and many others of course) mislead the people?

Those in the know, realise the truth behind the written word.

Thank goodness for blogs that allow others to say what is really going on out there.

According to DUK we can still bake fruit cakes, fruit scones and tea bread just as long as we don't add sugar!

"Experiment by reducing the added sugar in your baking recipes. Most cakes work even if the sugar in the recipe is cut by a half. Fruit cakes, fruit scones or tea breads can be made without added sugar. They do not require sugar and the dried fruit will provide sweetness.

Jams and marmalades. Ordinary will do or instead of using the traditional ratio of 1lb fruit to 1lb sugar you can reduce this to 1lb fruit to 3/4 lb sugar.

Cold desserts such as fruit fool and foods that require no further cooking, eg custard, can be sweetened to taste with a liquid or granulated intense sweetener.

Hot puddings, such as fruit pies, crumbles or bread pudding, can be sweetened with sugar if necessary but some fruit based puddings or puddings with added dried fruit will not require any sweetening at all."

Thanks for the link - that is very worrying. The only possible explanation is that they want diabetics to gain weight and need more medication.

I wonder if this is where the recent cupcake thread on DCUK originated,? giverny was merely following DUK advice according to this.
