Seven years to the day I buried my Father, he died riddled with diabetic complications.

Seven years to the day I buried my Father, he died riddled with type two diabetic complications. Like many of his generation he followed the advise of his medical professionals to the letter. He followed a high carb low fat regime. On insulin and ten type two related medications, his last years were blighted and painful. In his younger days he was a Royal Marine, he taught me about boxing and was a fighter to the end.

A tune he loved from the best military band in the world, well he certainly believed it. He also believed the Marines the best armed force in the world. No doubt other men and women from other armed forces would disagree with that. It's amazing the life long loyalty serving in the military so often brings about. Eddie

Thank you Annie

I couldn't let the old boy pass on without a fight and walk away. Low carbers saved me from a fate worse than death I hope.

We are all going to check out, but I hope I will be able to see where I am going and in one piece.

I'm sorry for you loss. I wish I could thank him for serving.

Thanks Gail

My father fought in WW2. He joined the Marines at 16 years and 8 months. Like many he lied about his age, and the military turned a blind eye, they needed all the men they could get.

One thing I remember him talking about was about his time in India. My Father came from a very humble and poor background, he thought he knew what poverty was all about until India.

In India he was humbled, when people who were poor beyond his belief, offered to share their food with him.

That set in me for life, a hatred of racism.

Oh Jan, this post hit home for me, as my own father passed away 25 years ago, and he was also a Marine. I bet you can just see your dad listening to this favorite song of his. I'm sorry to hear that he passed away from diabetes and it was painful in the last years. Thinking of you, Jan.

Hi Sheri, and many thanks for your kind comments. It was actually my husband Eddie's Dad who we referred to in this post...

My dad will be celebrating his birthday shortly as this coming weekend we have a family get-together to celebrate and wish him a Happy 90th Birthday.

Hope you have a good weekend

All the best Jan

The Greatest Generation!!!

Two days ago was the day when my father died at 51 from a heart arrest, it was 28 years ago. He was not fat, he didn't smoke or drink, all our food was cooked at home. It is the reason I am annoyed by the phrase "just eat the real food!" and by using leanness as a prove of a good health.
My father was an unusually gifted person, but a pessimist.

Galina - as always thank you for your comment. We were sorry to hear your father was taken from you at such a young age.
Yes, we do say eat whole real foods and we do think it is better than eating too much processed. But it by no means gives any certainty to our life expectancy. We know of parents who have lost loved ones at a young age, their child just six years of age.
We do not know what lays ahead of us all we can do is do our best to keep as healthy as possible.

Both Eddie and I (and all at the low carb team) thank you again for your continued support in the Low Carb Diabetic Blog.

Have a good weekend.

Warmest regards

Eddie and Jan
