DUK says "STATINS ARE GOOD, BUT ARE NO MAGIC BULLET"

"Clearly, statins play an important role in helping keep many hundreds of thousands of people with diabetes healthy, but we need to make sure we don’t lose sight of the fact that they are just one tool when it comes to keeping diabetes under control.

"They need to be considered alongside all the other things that make up good diabetes control and even if the findings of this new research were confirmed by further research – and that’s a big if! –statins wouldn’t suddenly be seen as a magic bullet. They will only ever be a single part of keeping people with diabetes healthy.

"So the coverage yesterday was good in that it highlighted once again that statins are important for people with diabetes. And it’s worth talking to your GP about statins if your cholesterol is high, as heart disease is a complication of diabetes and so it’s even more important that people with the condition have it under control"
