This post came in as a comment on the Barry Groves RIP thread last night. I will be commenting later but in the meantime I am interested in your comments and opinions. Eddie
Although a death is a saddening experience and my sympathies are with his family.
One must remember Mr Groves armed with a dodgy doctorate dispersed equally dodgy dietary and life style tips.
Such
as the gem as implying smoking fine as there is some sort of conspiracy
by the medical professional to deprive the public of smoking. Quoting
the mental rants of Dr. Kitty Little who claimed diesel fumes where to
blame for the increases in lung cancer amongst the like of lorry
drivers. Not there smoking habits or Barry Groves style breakfasts in
road side cafés.
By his own admission he suffered from bowel cancer and underwent surgery and conventional treatment for, only later to slag off.
He certainty did not live half a century in robust health as some have suggested.
He
books and website in my opinion are full of advice that should be taken
with a pinch of salt or in Barrys case a tablespoon of the stuff.

This person's spelling and grammar is appallingly bad. I doubt very much that this is an educated person, if I had received this comment it would have gone straight in the bin. His language and style is certainly not that of a bona fide academic, and doing a search on his name and Carmarthen didn't come up with anything.
In fact, if you do a search on University of Carmarthen, nothing comes up. There is only a campus at Carmarthen but it is part of the University of Wales.
Sounds like a fraud to me.
We thought the same Carole, time will tell. As you would imagine I have much to say on the subject. Let's see if we can get the Doctor to engage in a conversation.
Eddie
Why waste your valuable time talking to a fuckwit, Eddie?
Carole, I am hoping to find out if this guy is genuine, he may well be. Appalling grammar and spelling does not preclude you from the medical profession. Let us not forget the Welsh dietician, Christine A Cashin who plagued the Diabetes.Co.UK Forum and Dr John Briffa's blog rubbishing the low carb high fat diet and ridiculing Barry Groves at every opportunity.
Regards Eddie
Good luck, then!
Unbelievable what a sick bastard this Dr Jones is.
Hi guys.
Has it occurred to you this could be someone posing as Dr Jones, I can't believe a person of his calibre could stoop so low.
Regards
Helen
Yes it has occurred to us. But you would be surprised how low a medical pro will go.
Barry groves - ahhhhh another crackpot! Ally5555 July 2nd 2008
Here is an interesting piece of research - have to admit I have not read the actual paper but it does make you think! ally5555 August 15th, 2011,at the forum diabetes.co.uk

I think he is a very dodgy guy! He claims so many things and all are unproven . They are all following a pattern and so interlinked! - look at his links pages !
I emailed him a long time ago and he was very nasty! He is another one making alot of money - pity us HP are too ethical! - only joking!
Fergus I am still trying to read that book - must admit the back page is winding me up - fat doesnt make u fat - that is a joke yes - should see what some of my real clients have been eating - my guess is he has never spoken to a real person !! Ahhh im off to open a bottle of wine - well it is sat night!
I did not expect to see this article when I put my computer on. For me Barry Groves will be remembered as one of the good guys. I hope Dr Paul Jones will comment about this article further if it is him and if it is not him whoever wrote this article must surely be committing some type of fraud? I to did a google search as others have probably done and there is a Dr Paul Jones connected to the University of Wales which has a Carmarthen campus.

Hello avid readers,
Sorry about the grammar mistakes. I'm almost tempted to say what do you expect from a doctor.
Whilst some of you Flaneurs may not be familiar with the concept.
I wrote the post after a hard days works, whilst half asleep.
My apologies
Dr Paul Jones - University of Carmarthen
P.S I'm not completely against some of the things Barry has wrote. Just the idiotic rubbish which we all instinctively know is so. Smoking Fine, Really..!!
Pleased to read your comment this afternoon Dr Jones and that you are not against some of the things written by Barry Groves.
Paul B
Your right Paul B I'm not against everything written by Barry Groves.
His articles on Flight Archery are most enlightening.
Dr Paul Jones - University of Carmarthen
Dr Jones - I am sorry you do not fully agree with my views, and that of the many Barry Groves friends and fans. You only have to read comments on this blog, other LCHF blogs, the Jimmy Moore blog etc to see he had a great many who were in total agreement with him. I believe he was in his 70's and still enjoying archery. A very good sport, which many enjoy.
Can I point you towards a very interesting article on this blog dated 10th December 2012, which is very relevant to Barry Groves.

Dr Jones
I am surprised you found time to post on our humble blog, especially ‘after a hard days works, whilst half asleep’ I am even more surprised to see an academic, in a position of great responsibility and trust, denigrating a man who cannot defend himself and barely in the ground. Barry Groves must have really put the zap on you. I can understand that. While Universities send out dieticians and medics, fully armed with the kind of dietary information, that has lead to the early death of millions of diabetics around the world. Yet guys like Barry helped so many people to a far safer place than the NHS can achieve.
I would be most interested to hear your views, and opinions on the low carb high fat lifestyle for type two diabetics. I believe nothing else works, prove me wrong. I have been asking Doctors and medical professionals for five years, how do I hold non diabetic BG numbers with two Metformin pills other than low carb high fat, the silence has been deafening. Over to you Dr. Jones

"Flaneurs" Really! just what are you implying? methinks you've taken Prof Craig Currie's words "lazy porkers" and assumed because we are Type2 diabetics we fall into that category.
Fact I'm 6ft and weigh 154lb never been overweight and have always been active, well controlled diabetic for over five years, medication just one metformin daily and of course following a High Fat Low Carb diet.
"I wrote the post after a hard days works, whilst half asleep.
Bring on the violins! do you really think I don't know what hard work entails. I'm retired now but spent fifty years getting up in the early hours and putting in shifts of up to twelve hours now that's what I call hard work.
Kind regards
Graham
As an afterthought Dr Jones you should read this article by Prof Craig Currie Insulin may worsen outcomes of type 2 diabetes, perhaps you could convey to him it could be the dire low fat dietary advice that leads to the need for insulin and other dubious medications.
By the way we do have a Professor on the team who collates, analyses data and provides statistics for this blog. Being himself a Type 2 of over five years duration and on nil meds we value his contribution far more than non diabetic academics.
Cheers
Graham

Just a wild slab in the dark, but could it be due to the Metformin pills your taking.
Metformin an anti-diabetic drug that also has
LDL cholesterol and triglyceride reducing properties.
Dr Paul Jones - University of Carmarthen
HbA1c from almost 12 to 5 on two Metformin ! Don't make me larf !
Regards Eddie
To Dr Jones
Metformin can reduce HbA1c by a maximum of 1.5%. So it would have been impossible for Eddie to go from 12 to 5 without drastically reducing his carbohydrates too, as I had to do.
Martin
We don't know the severity of Eddie's diabetes. He may only require two Metformin pills.
They will certainly be conferring some protection against unhealthy levels of LDL cholesterol and triglyceride.
Would Eddie without that protection still be keen to follow his high fat diet?
It also begs the question should he recommend his eating habits to people that are not protected by medication that alters cholesterol ratios?
Dr Paul Jones - University of Carmarthen
Dr Jones
If you check out a lowcarb diet you will find almost always HDL cholesterol is raised, and trigs are drastically reduced, often below 1.0. Metformin offers a very small advantage, but is worth using for most type two diabetics. BTW you have not answered my question. How do I get to non diabetic HbA1c numbers other than lowcarb ?
Eddie
As for Barry Groves, his research as mentioned else where on this blog.
Consisted of hunting down studies regardless of how poorly done or old they where to support his nonsense about nutrition.
He would often give his interpretation of data that where totally different from the blatant obvious.
But worse of all is how masqueraded as authority on nutrition. With a dodgy doctorate obtain from some uncredited overseas college.
The man peddled crap.

P.S answer my questions -

A very wild stab (slab!) in the dark indeed, if Metformin was that good there would be no need for the NHS to spend a small fortune on other Antihyperglycaemic Agents.
Metformin an anti-diabetic drug that also has
LDL cholesterol and triglyceride reducing properties.
The three years I was diet controlled before Metformin my triglyceride's were always <1.0 mmol/L, LDL <3.5 and HDL >2.0
The last two years on one metformin daily have yielded the same lipid ranges.
The biggest influence on triglyceride's are carbohydrates, cut back on the carbs and the trigs will plummet, this is just one of the many benefits of LowCarb.

Metformin does next to nothing re. cholesterol ratios, haven’t you heard ? The medics push statins for that, and they have next to no benefits for most people and severely damage many others. Dr. Jones you must get a grip of the basic fundamentals if you want to be taken seriously on this blog. BTW I refuse to take statins and I need no protection from a lowcarb high fat diet whatsoever. On the contrary it has improved so many health markers as proved by the forty plus blood tests I have on a regular basis.
Have you any qualifications regarding human metabolism and best dietary practise or the control of diabetes ? I am beginning to doubt it, and you have the effrontery to run down Barry Groves and John Briffa !

Codswallop! Just goes to show how little you know about LowCarb diets Dr Jones:
Have high triglycerides? A new study shows that the fastest way to reduce your number is by carbohydrate restriction. Researchers discovered that with a dietary intervention of reducing carbohydrates in the patients diet to under 20 grams/day had a significant impact on their triglyceride levels and weight. In just two weeks patients saw a 42% decreases in their triglyceride levels and 4.3% reduction in body weight.

Low-carbohydrate weight loss diets have an edge over low-fat diets for improving HDL cholesterol levels long term, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Dieters who followed low-carb or low-fat plans for two years along with a lifestyle modification program lost the same amount of weight -- on average about 7% of their body weight or 15 pounds.
But throughout the two-year study, low-carbohydrate dieters had significantly increased HDL, or "good," cholesterol levels compared to low-fat dieters.
Low-Carb Diets Improve Cholesterol Long Term

Barry Groves died of the very thing he claimed his diet prevented, a heart attack. So I Dr Paul Jones comments questioning Groves diet is valid.
