Jigsaw Puzzles : Did You Know ?

Jigsaw Puzzles ... do you enjoy doing them? They are certainly a popular past-time. Here in the UK many libraries and community groups hold 'jigsaw puzzle' sessions where you can pop in and place a few pieces. There are usually enough puzzles on the various tables to go around ...

Of course nowadays you can also do puzzles on your computer. I've not tried this but I think some blogland friends have. If you have do please share your thoughts about them in the comments section.

It was way back in 1760 that the first puzzle was developed by John Spilsbury to teach students geography. They became such a valuable resource, subjects expanded to include alphabets, botany, history, and zoology. Spilsbury was a cartographer and had the brilliant idea of placing a map on a piece of wood and cutting out sections of the map.

Before they were called 'jigsaw puzzles', they were named 'dissected maps', which does make sense because as the first puzzles were designed from cutting up sections of a map, they were aptly called 'dissected maps'. As they evolved over the years and cutting techniques changed, they were renamed 'jigsaw puzzles'.

Many years ago puzzles were previously enjoyed mainly by the wealthy. They were not always mass-produced like they are today, and raw materials were expensive.  When Spilsbury created the original puzzles, among the students that learned with this tool were the children of King George III and Queen Charlotte, who were taught by the royal governess, Lady Charlotte Finch.

Did you know their are many health benefits of puzzles. Puzzles are beneficial for your brain and brain health. Not only can they increase your mood, but they also improve your mental reasoning and spatial awareness, enhance your short-term memory and help you with problem-solving. They can even lower stress levels, provide your brain with a mental workout, and potentially increase your IQ score by up to 4 points.

If you enjoy travelling, and jigsaw puzzles, how about visiting The Puzzle Museum! Aptly named The Puzzle Mansion, this bed and breakfast/puzzle museum is located in the Philippines and has over 1500 preserved puzzles on display. It is recognised by the Guinness World Records as containing the largest collection of puzzles on the globe. They have puzzles of all shapes and sizes, genres, subject matters, sources, and more.

Are you quite quick at doing puzzles? Do you like a 500 piece one or perhaps a 1000? You might think a 1000 piece puzzle would only take twice as long as doing a 500 piece one ... well sorry you would be wrong! As a 1,000-piece puzzle will take you four times as long as a 500-piece puzzle.

Believe it or not, this is true. While one would think it would only take double the amount of time, every time the amount of pieces is doubled, the difficulty is quadrupled. The length of time it takes to complete a puzzle significantly increases the higher the piece count.

Apparently actors Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman, enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles and also the late Queen Elizabeth II. I wonder if King Charles III enjoys them?
Words above from article here

Of course you may like to enjoy a drink and a biscuit when doing your puzzle ... be careful not to spill your drink of get too many crumbs over your puzzle though! Lower carb cookies/biscuits are nice, and you can see the recipes here

We enjoy puzzles, do them mostly in the winter when we are stuck inside. I do some online too but it's not the same as the real thing in my opinion.

Yes, we enjoy jigsaw puzzles here. In winter we have one going all the time. We find Buffalo brand puzzles are the best. I didn't know some of the history you wrote about. Very interesting. I tried computer puzzles but for me it just wasn't as fun as the real thing.

I love jigsaw puzzles and knew the benefits but absolutely nothing of the history you gave us. Thanks.

So interesting to read the history of puzzles! I do enjoy them and one of my grandsons loves doing them with me. We have been doing smaller, 100 piece puzzles, but I think he might be ready for larger puzzles soon.
I have just been diagnosed pre-diabetic, so I will be enjoying your recipes even more, now! The cookies sound good and thank you for all the delicious offerings. Hope you are enjoying this wonderful month of May! x K

We always had a 1000 pc jigsaw puzzle every Christmas. The largest one was 1,500 pcs They are addictive, for sure. Not too keen on the online ones personally as, with Parkinson's it can be tricksy to move the pieces successfully. There is always a jigsaw on the go where I attend hospice during the week.

Interesting information about the benefit of puzzle and the Philipine's museum, where we can see 1500 puzzles.
I've heard of chess and burraco on my computer, but not about puzzle.

I had no idea about the Puzzle Museum in the Philippines. Or that a 1000 piece puzzle takes 4 times more time than a 500 piece. It's been a long time since I did puzzles, but the last was a 500 piece. I'm more into doing magazine crosswords and a couple of games on my mobile phone. Have a nice weekend Jan.

I have just completed a 1000 pieces jigsaw puzzle. I found a spare piece in the box when I finished. It is probably a missing piece from a puzzle elsewhere. If you have a piece missing from your puzzle, it's probably the one I've got. It is green with leaves and a bit of sky, sea, and people on the beach with mountains in the background.

God bless.

When I broke my foot I started with jigsaws (online) - wow, those are super-interesting facts!!!
And yes, when I am exhausted I do those puzzles, I use this.

This was so interesting. I had no idea of the history of jigsaws. I really enjoy doing puzzles and have tried them on the computer. I don't find those as satisfying as real puzzles - they necessarily lack the tactile element involved in handling the pieces.

We like doing 2000 piece puzzles in the winter. We only get two or three finished, but it’s a lot of fun, working a little bit each day.

I love doing a good jigsaw puzzle but I need the right work space and sometimes that is the hard part! This was fascinating -- I didn't know anything about the history.

Very interesting to read the history of jigsaw puzzles. I do enjoy them, usually in the winter months. The only online puzzles I've done have been through the Jacquie Lawson digital Advent calendar. They are very simple. My little grandchildren enjoy them that way, too.

Thanks for sharing this, Jan. I do like jigsaw puzzles, but none over 1,000 pieces. My favourite brand is Ravensburger, made in Germany. It is one of the best quality, if not the best quality puzzle you can buy.

Hi Jan,
We did so many puzzles at home when my kids were little, we all loved doing them. I have some large ones, with 1500 pieces, which I had framed and they are on the wall.
Hugs and all the best for you

I used to do a lot of puzzles, but I had a dedicated space for them. Now I don't. I tried a 3-D puzzle and I simply couldn't get it to work for me. I gave it to a friend who tried to put it together. Not sure if he ever got it together or not. I go by color, then shape. What is frustrating is when you get it finished and ONE piece is missing.

We really got back into Jigsaw puzzles during the pandemic, I would never have been able to do the maths to know how long a 1000 piece jigsaw would take!
Have a happy week!

How fascinating. I do try to do a couple puzzles a year. I am currently working on my second one but I am afraid I may be missing a piece.. which I hate.

We haven't done puzzles in awhile, our cats , love to knock them all over and we lose pieces, but we did enjoy it before these two came along, LOL! I have not tried the ones on the computer either, but know of a couple that do them. I guess if they are good for my brain I should start them up again :)

I do enjoy a jigsaw puzzle now and again. I remember having map puzzles of the British Isles and The World when I was a child. My mum loved doing puzzles and always said it kept her brain active.

I like doing puzzles but due to lack in time I have done few until now and it’s when my eldest son brought some puzzles books for younger brothers from Karachi
