I have just been watching a program tonight about the days of steam railways. That was my world as a kid. Imagine the change I have seen, from steam railways to Concord and beyond. From the days of waiting months for a phone line (often a shared party line with next door neighbours) to the internet, and instant communication with almost anyone in the world.
So much progress, but in many ways, I miss the time when I grew up. The annual holiday was spent down in Ramsgate with my Grandmother, who lived in a very big four story terraced house. We travelled down by steam train, which was very exciting. At my Grandmothers I shared a huge and very high double bed with my brother. The place reeked of lavender polish, and in the bedrooms we had very large china bowls and huge china jugs filled with water for washing our faces and hands in the morning. No on suite bathrooms in those days.
My old Granny was a bingo nut, and always had lots of great stuff she had won for me and my brother. Stuff like cowboy hats and cap guns. She was a lovely old lady and never a cross word, she died from diabetes complications at around 65 years of age. One of my earliest memories was the day she died. My Mum was doing the washing with an old fashioned boiler, stirring the washing with a big stick, (when we received a telegram we did not have a phone). The telegram informed my Mum, her Mum had died. It was the only time I saw my Mum cry.
I remember searching among the rock pools on the beach, and staring in wonder at the sea. On the way back to my Grannies, we would stop at the Eagle pub. In those days kids were not allowed in pubs, so while my parents had a pre dinner drink inside, my brother and myself would sit outside with a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps. Simple days, but I could understand those days. These days, I am not so sure.

Romantic views of the days of yore, what's the world come to Eddie eh? All these dratted pharmaceuticals curing people left, right and centre. Got a feeling you are not keen on those pesky gay and lesbian types if I recall your previous post here, try telling the HIV+ amongst them that modern drugs don't work! Oh and blocks of lard are good for you, from factory farmed pigs fed garbage? A refined factory produced none whole food, full of God knows what and recommended here.
Good grief, what a diatribe my anon friend.
I have no problem with gay people full stop. What consenting adults do in private is no issue to me. I have friends who are gay, the world needs all the love it can get get, don't you think.
As for big pharma drugs, many are useless, not my opinion, that of the boss of GSK as posted here. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/glaxo-chief-our-drugs-do-not-work-on-most-patients-5508670.html
Please try harder if you are going to wind me up!
Regards Eddie
Although I love technology, I think sometimes we're too connected. I miss some of that quiet simpler time, where families spent more time together... it's interesting how fast life has changed...
I know what you mean Launna
It's hard to explain. People are so busy these days. Getting our family together requires weeks of planning these days.
That being said, simple pleasures like walking the beach with our grandchildren, and watching the wonder in their eyes, is all we need these days. It seems to us, kids grow up far to quick these days. It's a shame. But what do a couple of old geriatrics like me and Jan know.
Eddie
That is exacting the same as we had, what a dream.
Lovely memories of your grandmother but not the news of her death.
I remember telegrams :)
Happy Easter.
simple is always best
Kids were talking about a program they'd watched. I stopped them and I told them I'd taped it. "Did you 'tape' it miss?" "What else have you got 'taped miss?" Never felt so old.
Times have changed even in the last 5 years - phones are every where around the school, kids have one ear peace in at all times. It's like they need a backing track to their entire life.
The best thing though? Being aware of options because of open discussion on the Internet on websites like this. Cheers Eddie (and Jan and Graham)
Ah nostalgia! They don't make it like they used to. Ever feel you want to go back, and then set off in a different direction?
@ Anonymouse cretin
Is homophobia your hang up you obviously speak as an authoritarian is this from personal experience ? As you appear to have a friendless existence is a valued confident something alien to you
Straight as a dye
Kind regards
Graham
If I were able, I'd love a bite of each.
Hello Ivy, many thanks for your comment, which I think you intended for this post here:
http://thelowcarbdiabetic.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/cakes-decisions-for-easter-all-low-carb.html
The cakes are good and made using almond flour is something that many, but not all, diabetics and non diabetics can eat. Allergies and any other underlying health conditions must always be taken into account.
Enjoy your weekend
All the best Jan
Whatever happened to Eddie, Graham? He used to seem like a half decent left winger till Corbyn got the leadership, since then he's clammed up like a bi-valve under threat. But then you two are contrarian by personality so I guess that explains it, Eddie's left wing days were over as soon as a real left winger stepped into a position of power. If the NHS did a u-turn and told everyone to go ketogenic you two would turn fruitarian overnight!

Well as far as I know Eddie is still a rabid left winger, as for me an ex shop steward and still a union member in the retired section a leopard never changes his spots.
As much as your comment was at least unrepresentative of the usual anon comments which I appreciate your very suggestion that we are contrarian is debatable to say the least. For the past eight years we have never changed our Low Carb omnivore stance so fruitarians we will never be that's a load of bananas LoL
Cheers
Graham
