Approximately 15 million people visit The New Forest every year, today we had the place pretty much to ourselves. At our picnic spot it was totally silent other than the sound of birds, and far away from the madding crowd, a day to remember.

"The New Forest is one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and forest in the south-east of England. It was proclaimed a royal forest by William the Conqueror, featuring in the Domesday Book. Pre-existing rights of common pasture are still recognised today, being enforced by official verderers. In the 18th century, The New Forest became a source of timber for the Royal Navy. It remains a habitat for many rare birds and mammals." From Wikipedia

...a treasure to preserve.
Recently our son ran the New Forest Marathon and we had a weekend there to enjoy ourselves and then to support him (which was also enjoyable!). It is a lovely place.

I've never heard of the New Forest, but your photos prove it is an incredibly beautiful wilderness that must be saved and preserved for all time.

I was puzzled about the continent of hemisphere, northern or southern. So, thanks for the explanation. It sounds like a great place to visit.
Those trees are so straight! And I love the ferns. I have a collection of potted ferns.
"... determined to not take our good fortune for granted" is a great way of living, we do so, too - enjoy!
Interesting to know that you too have these kind of ancient and untouched forests. As you know Finland lives of forest and I have one great in my neighbourhood. Love to walk there between tree trunks and ferns!
Love the New Forest - it's a very special place. You'll be delighted to know that we had our first frost the other morning...
Great place to walk and have a picnic.
