"Can you tell me what I should eat while I am taking warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)? What foods should I avoid?
Warfarin is a blood-thinning medication that helps treat and prevent blood clots. There is no specific warfarin diet. However, certain foods and beverages can make warfarin less effective in preventing blood clots. It's important to pay attention to what you eat while taking warfarin.
One nutrient that can lessen warfarin's effectiveness is vitamin K. It's important to be consistent in how much vitamin K you get daily. The adequate intake level of vitamin K for adult men is 120 micrograms (mcg). For adult women, it's 90 mcg. While eating small amounts of foods that are rich in vitamin K shouldn't cause a problem, avoid consuming large amounts of certain foods or drinks, including:
- Kale
- Spinach
- Brussels sprouts
- Collards
- Mustard greens
- Chard
- Broccoli
- Asparagus
- Green tea
- Cranberry juice
- Alcohol

My late mom took warfarin I never knew about these interactions.
I am SO thankful I am not a diabetic, but I am glad you are willing to share this info with those who need it.
That's very important information! Interesting to note that vitamin K is included in veggies that are considered healthy and therefore widely recommended like broccoli and spinach,

My husband is on this since his last heart surgery-it is a horrible medicine wish there was an alternative-but there is not another safe drug out there for use with his heart valve transplant
Some medications taken will deplete certain nutrient in the body, must consult Physician for supplements.
Beautiful image of autumn..
So many medications interact with each other - and with our daily diet. It pays to be careful.
Ingo took Coumadin and it sent him straight to hospital more than once. Now he takes Aspirin - a better alternative (in his case).
You often put little visual surprises in your posts - thanks - your Autumn bowl is indeed inspiring :)
Thanks for sharing the good advice. Valerie
Often the same when having an operation, certain foods should be avoided a couple of weeks before surgery...good article.
Important info, I am glad I am not diabetic.
Take care, enjoy your day!
My father had warfarin for the last 28 years of his life. His levels were very stable and my doctor said it was because he consumed little alcohol and his diet had consistent amounts of vegetables. He was a high doses of the drug due a rare blood clotting anomaly.
Interesting information. I was not familiar with the Warfarin diet. That autumn bowl is a beauty!
