Yes, that’s a logical conclusion of a fascinating new randomized controlled trial in Australia, notes Dr. Bret Scher, Medical Director of Diet Doctor.
“I really love this study. It was so well done,” explains Dr. Scher in his DD News video.
The study followed more than 7,000 elderly patients living in 60 residential care homes and found that those whose diets were supplemented with more yogurt, cheese, and milk had significantly lower risks of falls and fractures than those whose diets were the usual care-home menu.
British Medical Journal: Effect of dietary sources of calcium and protein on hip fractures and falls in older adults in residential care: cluster randomised controlled trial
“It makes such a really good control trial, in that you know what they’re eating because you’re providing them with their food,” explains Dr. Scher. “It turns out, they didn’t need much time to show some impressive benefits.”
In fact, within three months, the elderly residents randomized to the higher dairy intake were showing a reduced incidence of falls. By five months, they had a reduced incidence of fractures.
“That’s just five months of eating extra milk, cheese and yogurt,” said Dr. Scher.
It was likely the extra protein, as well as the extra calcium and other integral nutrients found in the whole food dairy products that contributed to the benefit, Dr. Scher notes.
“Why is this better than calcium supplements? Well, to me it makes total sense because it’s real food,” said Dr. Scher.

...cheese is my favorite dairy product.
I eat almost daily cottage cheese and squeeze a few drops of milk in my cup every time I have a cup of coffee. I used to eat yogurt too, but they stopped producing my favorite one; perhaps it's temporary.
Anyway, I believe the title regarding protection of the bones,is correct.
Calcium.
Buen consejo adoro el queso y el yogur. Te mando un beso
Love cheese, esp. Parmesan. So I have one more good reason to enjoy them :-)
I like lactose free milk
Good.
I'm developing quite a liking for different cheeses lately, so I'm happy to hear they are good for me!
Super blog
Glad I can eat/drink all that!
And it´s yummy, too.
I love cheese, a bit picky with yoghurt but only like milk when it's added to something, I couldn't drink a straight glass of milk, I've never liked it from being a child.
I love dairy products, and always enjoy them. Valerie
Hello,
I do not like drinking milk, but I do love cheese.
Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!
That a great post, Jan! I was interested in your article about the importance of integral nutrients found in the whole food dairy products.
With regards to calcium and its important role in bone formation and strength, I have heard that drinking coffee with, or a few minutes after, a meal can interfere with the absorption calcium and other important substances, such as iron. Isn't it? Do you think it is true? ... I would like to know your point of view.
Regards,
Giorgio
What an informative study! We love cheese and I eat whole milk organic yogurt almost daily. The key word is "whole", so many of the nutrients need fat to help absorb into the body. Guess our ancestors knew what they were doing!
I am a big dairy eater.
I think my bones will be in good shape! I've been a big dairy gal my entire life...especially when it comes to cheese.
The reason I could NEVER be a vegan is because I can't live without my dairy. Besides loving cheese, I use half and half (light cream) in my coffee that I drink 24/7. I really appreciated this article, Jan.
Dairy is so important. I make a delicious yogurt parfait every night to make sure I am getting my calcium. Cheese makes my taste buds happy too!
A fascinating article indeed, thank you for sharing this important information.
What luck - I'm a fan of dairy products :-)) Thanks for the article.
Many greetings to you. Have a happy weekend ...
Today we had sun and tomorrow ... Sunday rain. So out when the sun is shining.
Thank you for sharing.
I sure like dairy and love a nice big glass of milk.

Hello Giorgio, many thanks for your comment and question.
I am not a medical expert, and in fact prefer drinking tea to coffee ... but you may be interested to read this article which states the best time to drink coffee is between 10 a.m. and noon, and between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. please read more here

Darn! I wish I wasn’t lactose intolerant.
I'm able to tolerate goat milk, so I drink it daily. Sometimes it is hard to find in stores.
I do enjoy dairy products! Cheese, particularly.
I love having more reasons to eat my dairy products :)
Thanks for your answer about drinking coffee, Jan. I also enjoyed the interesting article which you mentioned.
Have a nice Sunday :-)
Cottage cheese, yoghurt, and cheese are my favorite dairy products.
Very interesting post. My 96 year old mother in law is in a nursing home. I find that it is difficult for her to chew and digest food. Dairy seems to something that she can eat easily ( cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream) and enjoy. Glad to know it's so good for her.
