HEALTH ALERT: People urged not to eat supermarket gravy containing PAINT THINNER chemical!

OFFICIALS have issued an urgent safety notice after potentially dangerous levels of a paint thinner chemical were found in batches of supermarket gravy granules.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is urging people not to consume Kania Gravy Granules bought from the supermarket chain Lidl over fears they could cause nasty side effects.

Two batches of the product contain the chemical xylene, which is used to make paint thinner, and which when consumed can cause symptoms including headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

According to Public Health England exposure to xylene can also cause irritation of the mouth, throat, nose and lungs and in severe cases even lead to heart problems, liver and kidney damage and coma.

A spokesman for Lidl said it was taking the health alert "very seriously" and added that the supermarket has launched an investigation with its supplier to find out how the chemical got into the granules.
