Remembrance 2018 - We Will Remember Them

We will remember them, and say thank you to the brave men and women,

past and present who fight to preserve our freedoms.

We shall remember you at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance.

In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write the now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'.

I remember. My first contact with war came with Vietnam. I was 15 years old at the time, and we didn't have computers and world news stations like now, so the war seemed so far away to me. Then, my friend's brother came home from the war. He wasn't even 20 years old, and he wasn't the same. So depressed. One day he went down into the basement and put a shotgun in his mouth. That was the day the war became real for me.

Today marks the 100 anniversary of the Great War. We remember history, but sadly don't seem to learn from it.

Long ago when I was in elementary school we were taught the poem and brought money for a poppy to wear in remembrance. I wonder if that is still done in the early grades now?

I memorized that poem as a child and it's been said at almost every Remembrance Day service I've attended since. So evocative. We will remember them.

I suspect the poem will long outlive any of us. It's transcended time and geographic boundaries.
