For some of us here in the UK we have been enjoying dry, sunny weather. I was fortunate to meet up recently with some of the younger generation of the family and their little ones. It was a lovely time and I came away with yet more wonderful memories to cherish.
The idea about this 'Did You Know' post actually came from one of the little ones as she tucked into a delicious looking strawberry ice-cream ... my choice was of course a cup of tea ... but ice cream I thought! Yes, let's look up some interesting facts, so here are five 😊
2. The first ice cream parlour in America opened in New York around 1790. Later, during Prohibition, in the 1920s, ice cream parlours replaced many bars and saloons as places to gather and listen to music.
3. New Zealand consumes the most ice cream per capita in the world, at a whopping 7.4 gallons (28 L) per person every year!
4. Ice cream was freeze-dried for astronauts starting with the Apollo missions.
5. Ice cream is a significant source of vitamins A and B-12, but of course Ice cream is generally high in carbs and sugar, so maybe a bowl of broccoli could be better than a bowl of ice cream!
... and of course mentioning ice cream there is a lower carb (sugar free) vanilla version you may wish to try when your weather turns warm, see it here

Did you know any of these facts?
All the best Jan

...there was a local ice cream shop that each year had an April Fools Day flavor. They came up with some strange flavors to say the least.
I knew about the astronauts (# 4). I saw an ad yesterday selling a new product that looks like a Keurig coffee maker. Instead of the place to put pods,. there is a place to make soft serve ice cream at home in small batches without all the stirring. It appears to be called DIY soft serve ice cream machine. and costs about $70.00 US dollars.
I'm not an ice cream lover. I only have it a few times a year when it's really hot out, then I'll have a root beer float or a chocolate shake.
A bowl of broccoli...sigh. 😂
Greek yogurt with fresh berries is good too, as a substitute.
Those were fun facts to read. I don't have a fave place to go however, I LOVE my Ninja Creami Ice Cream maker. So easy to make low-sugar takes on ice cream and add things like white beans and other gems.
No lo sabía, geniales datos. Te mando un beso.
Thanks for sharing this, Jan. I have ice cream perhaps just once a year, and try hard to just drink extra water when it is hot. As well, I love cucumbers and find they do a good job at cooling me down...and the odd time I crave a slice of watermelon!
We have ice cream in the freezer at all times so it doesn't really surprise me that NZ eats the most per capita per year. My favorite, French vanilla.
this was so fun and i loved that picture!! my niece lives in new zealand, i'll have to tell her that fun fact!! have a lovely weekend!!
Great facts!
I love strawberry ice cream!!
We used to make it homemade without a lot of sugar!!
Inspired by a sunny day and a child’s strawberry ice cream, your 'Did You Know' post serves up a sweet blend of history, science, and joy, all wrapped in cherished family moments.
I think I'd prefer a cup of tea, as well, but I do have an occasional ice cream. I never realised it was invented so long ago. Xx
Interesting, and yes I should stop eating ice cream in a cone most nights.
I am not really an ice cream fan - though I do like sorbet. And broccoli
I didn't know any of this. Fascinating!
Very interesting facts!!!!
2006 the ice-cream of the year in Perth was: Vegemite! Your Marmite-version.
I prefer cinnamon, though.
Nowadays we can enjoy various different flavored ice cream. Wasabi ice cream is one of them, mixture of sweetness of ice cream and spicy wasabi. Talking of #5, how about broccoli ice cream?
I did know it was invented in China. I got to try freeze dried ice cream when I was in school as part of a space unit. My fave is Graeters Coconut Chocolate Chunk, but I only have it once every few years.
Interessante questo post sul gelato.

Hello and many thanks for your comment.
Yes, I haven't tried it but, there are quite a few broccoli ice cream recipes on the internet ...
Enjoy your weekend.
All the best Jan
I only ever eat ice cream on holiday then it's the really dark chocolate - yum! Take care and have a great weekend Jan xx
Hi Jan,

Hello,
Interesting facts on ice cream, I have various favorite flavors.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend.
Very interesting this information about ice cream that I love but a health problem and until my next surgery has me on a very strict diet not only of ice cream, of many things.
Happy weekend.
Best regards.
Ice cream for me is a warm weather treat. My SIL was the comptroller for Ben and Jerry's ice cream in VT (now part of Unilever, I think) Anyway as part of her work percs, she could have a pint of ice cream per day! She would save her pints and bring loads with her when she came to the annual family gathering hosted by Himself's youngest brother.
I was so excited to find these chocolate covered ice cream bon bons at Trader Joe that had only 6 carbs for all 12 in the package. I feel very virtuous eating only three!
I love ice cream - but it is not my friend. I did know about the freeze dried ice cream.
Me gustan los de chocolate. Gracias por la información Jan.
Buen fin de semana para Todos.
Un abrazo.
I know that it has lots of calories and my husband's weight it low so it's a good treat for him. I sometimes get sugar free Klondike bars. They are yummy with the chocolate coating!
Interesting facts about ice cream. I have a small bowl of it just about every evening for my snack as you know!! :)
I am very fond of ice cream and TRY to make my portions small. However, I don't think I'd ever choose a bowl of broccoli as a substitute :)
Here in northern New England I think every town has their own ice cream stand. We stopped and had some today. Yes, broccoli might be healthier, but it was enjoyable to have a sweet treat. Have as wonderful rest of your weekend Jan.
Very interesting. I love ice cream... Coconut, pistache and chocolate are favorites ...
I knew 1, 4, and 5. Chocolate is my favorite. I like to make a Coke float with it.
All interesting facts.

Interesting fun facts about ice cream. We have some in the freezer at the moment which might be needed this week if it stays sunny.
I learned a lot about ice cream I didn't know :) Hubby has found Carbsmart ice cream here in the U.S. that he likes and doesn't raise his blood sugar, so he is a happy guy :)
Hello Jan :)
I love vanilla ice cream the best, and ate two bowls of it last week when we had several power cuts. It was much softer than usual but still delicious. I didn't know any of the fun facts.
Todo muy interesante, me ha gustado conocer cosas sobre el helado. Besos.
