'MCT oil helps seniors with Alzheimer’s disease'

Use of medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil in subjects with Alzheimer's disease: A randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, crossover study, with an open‐label extension

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, currently with no effective therapy.
  • The brain is an obligate glucose user. AD is associated with impaired cerebral glucose metabolism.
  • Ketones are an alternative source of cerebral fuel.
  • Medium chain triglyceride oil (MCT) is a nutritional source of ketones.
  • This study suggests consistent MCT oil intake stabilizes cognition in AD subjects, especially in mild to moderate disease.
  • This is the longest duration MCT AD study to date. Eighty percent had stabilization or improvement in cognition, and better response with 9‐month continual MCT oil.

It's such a terrible disease, it's good to know that they're finding ways to help people who have it, and hopefully, one day we'll understand it better and a cure can be found.

Everything that comes out to stop this disease is very good. I know her well, Eddie. We spent 11 long years with my father. And it is very sad to see how your family member gradually loses everything and his absent and lost look, which was sadder every day.
Hopefully a cure for it can be found soon.
Thanks for the info.
A hug.

I've never heard of MCT oil before, but the study sounds quite interesting and well put together, too.

I use to take that everyday. Not sure why I stopped.

Thanks for providing the link to the actual study. I've been hearing about MCT in Alzheimer Disease for 5-10 years. The study at hand was very small, only 20 participants. Nevertheless it does provide some hope in slowing progression of the disease. The goal dose of Bulletproof MCT oil was one tablespoon (15 ml) three times a day. Actual average consumption was 15 ml twice daily. In some study participants, dose was limited by abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting.
