The British Dietetic Association's role in the diabetes epidemic.

Over at the Spectator, we are being warned about yet another fad diet "Not just a fad: the dangerous reality of clean eating" Clean eating apparently is just another fad diet, not only a fad, but "likely to make you ill" As almost always, in a MSM article on diets, BDA or spokesperson Sian Porter is giving us the benefit of their acumen. Sian is a consultant dietitian an acknowledged expert on diet. Before I go on, I would like to give you my idea of clean eating. This is what I said and posted on our website over eight years ago, regarding the clean food approach to healthy eating.

"Fresh meat, fish, eggs, cheese and cream, at least ten vegetables or salad items a day. Use good oils and nuts. We call this diet the clean food approach. The less man has been involved, the healthier the food is likely to be. Keep away from added sugar, salt, colouring's and preservatives etc. as much as possible"

You may be wondering, why the BDA and Sian Porter RD regard eating fresh food from the farm or sea, a fad and dangerous diet. Call me cynical, but could it be because the BDA and Sian are sponsored by junk food outfits? Could it be they are clueless, as to what constitutes a clean food low carb higher healthy fat diet?

From the Spectator article.

"Sian Porter, a consultant dietitian, warns that ‘if people do not plan really carefully for substitutes for food groups then you can end up malnourishing yourself.’ So these diets are not simply a silly fad that might leave you a little skinnier. The pursuit of wellness and ‘clean eating’ could, in the long-term, make you unwell. ‘Often, these people have found that an approach works for them, and that’s great,’ says Porter. ‘But it doesn’t mean that it will work for anyone else"

Here is Sian promoting the high carb high sugar Whitworths Shots junk snacks.

59.8 grams of carb and 50.3 grams of sugar per 100 grams.

Clearly Sian's weight loss is a work in progress. What's that I hear, don't be cruel. OK maybe so, but so is promoting high sugar and high carb products as healthy foods. Check out Sian flogging margarine, while working for the Fat Panel and potatoes for the Potato Council here.

"As the British Dietetic Association puts it, carbohydrates are crucial; they represent the body’s main energy supply and should make up half of each meal. They are not inherently fattening; any unneeded energy ‘will be converted into fat no matter what the source’. Those low-carb diets? Research suggests they ‘don’t seem to help people lose weight and keep it off’. But the overwhelming message from the plethora of people urging us to eat cauliflower couscous and gluten-free loaves is a simple one: carbs are bad"

There is no such thing as an essential carb, this was scientifically proved, beyond all doubt, a long time ago. Carbs are crucial, if you want to make money flogging them, or want sponsorship for your Dietetic Association. BDA sponsors Danone, Abbott Nutrition, Nestle, Cereal Partners, BelVita Breakfast Biscuits and Coca Cola.

The New Year is traditionally a time, when people make New Years resolutions. Going on a diet and losing weight, must be pretty close to top of the list. I suggest you try my idea of a clean food diet, if you are looking to lose some weight. Drop the potatoes and other high starch foods, drop high carb and high sugar foods, dump margarine and other Frankenstein fats. Let's be brutally honest, that sort of junk hasn't done Sian any favours has it. It may have expanded her wallet, but, you get the picture.

I seen to enjoy my meal when it is more colorful. We love fresh food and love growing much of our own. Surely seems to taste better.

I like the idea of the clean foods, but I'm not a fan of fish, although I eat a small can of tuna once or twice a week, and I really can't see myself eating at least 10 veg or salad items a day on my very limited budget. And there are so many foods I don't like. But I do plan to cut right down on my sugar intake and limit the icecream I've been indulging in.

I like 'clean eating' best - I feel better when I eat good foods, fresh, made by me. In a week, I'm taking a workshop on various things to do with veggies so they're not so boring. Looking forward to that.
