Special Report: The war on big food !

Major packaged-food companies lost $4 billion in market share alone last year, as shoppers swerved to fresh and organic alternatives. Can the supermarket giants win you back?

And here’s one number to capture that skepticism: An analysis by Moskow found that the top 25 U.S. food and beverage companies have lost an equivalent of $18 billion in market share since 2009. “I would think of them like melting icebergs,” he says. “Every year they become a little less relevant.”

The search for authenticity has led organic food sales to more than triple over the past decade and increase 11% last year alone to $35.9 billion, according to the Organic Trade Association. Data provider Spins found that sales of natural products across nearly every category are growing in mainstream retailers, while more than half of their conventional counterparts are in decline.

Today many fear that it’s the processed food itself that’s making us unhealthy. Indeed, nearly half of the respondents in a recent Bernstein survey say they distrust the food system.

The peoples eyes are slowly opening. Processed foods are not the best for our bodies. Organic and whole fresh foods are best.

Whole foods sadly exclude cream, coconut oil,and the like,these exclude the remaining milk and coconut flesh.Same with lard, flaxseed oil even butter, they are obviously not whole having being processed to the extent that some of the original content has been extracted or changed.The only whole food dairy product is raw milk.

We have always try to steer away from processed foods. The taste of fresh and home cooked food is so much better and is better for you and the environment too. Sarah x

Unfortunately whole milk is neither cost effective or practical for a T2 diabetic, due to the lactose the only suitable use would be in tea or coffee and as it does not keep very well that would make it expensive and impractical.

I don't have a problem with using minimally processed butter, cream, coconut oil etc, far better than the highly processed reduced fat alternatives

There are truly busy people who can benefit from buying something ready-to use. Industry is taking a notice of a public concern for healthy foods. I recently saw a gluten-free Swedish style frozen meatballs, there is a decent stew meat available everywhere, frozen packs of different vegetables ready after 5 minutes in a microwave.
I cook my food anyway regardless of how busy or not i am because it how I was raised, but there are people who are challenged in that way.

Wife and I buy vegetables, organic is best. Also grass fed animals meats and free range eggs are better. More expensive but food has better taste.
