Comedian Lenny Henry controls his diabetes with a low carb diet !

Comedian Lenny Henry has revealed he shed three stone to combat the devastating effects of diabetes - the disease which cost his mother her legs. The 55-year-old revealed his dramatic weight loss last month.
The Comic Relief frontman told The Daily Mirror he was driven to change his diet and take up yoga to improve his health after doctors diagnosed him with diabetes.

Diabetics suffer high blood sugar levels, because their body is unable to process glucose effectively, due to a total or partial lack of insulin produced by the pancreas. While Type 1 diabetes is a life-long condition, Type 2 can be controlled and in many cases reversed through a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Henry now eats sugar-free food and has started to take regular classes in Ashtanga yoga to battle the disease, which can be fatal and causes serious health complications. The well-known face of the Premier Inn adverts, said the disease cost his mother Winnifred both her legs after medics were forced to amputate her limbs before she died in 1998.

The condition can cause problems with circulation and can result in damage to a patients' nerves, which in turn can lead to amputations when infections are not detected by the body.

The comedian, and actor, has shown what can be achieved. If your family has a history of diabetes it could be wise to give consideration to the type and ratio of foods you are consuming.

I think Gloria Hunniford also reduced the number of carbohydrates to lose weight, it is on your blog in a separate article,Val.

Gloria Hunniford was pre diabetic. I bet Lenny had access to advice not dished out by the NHS for diabetics.
Good on him, hope he stays fit and healthy on lowcarb.

Where did DCUK get the news that it was a low carb diet? There is no reference on their website.

Remember Dawn French, his ex, doing a low carb diet but she gave it up.
